Advantage, cleaner running truck.
Advantage, exhaust fumes generated take longer to burn your eyes.
Advantage, quieter exhaust.
Disadvantage, quieter exhaust.
Disadvantage, loss of ~10hp.
Disadvantage, heat, cats need be close to the engine, which means under your cab, heat shield will help.
Disadvantage, likely will not last a long time on our old trucks, making them clog quickely, robbing even more power, and needing replaced.
Disadvantage, cost.
If you can pass emmissions without one, I think you'd be happier that way, unless you are very consious of the enviroment...
I'm sure there are more technical pro's/con's, but that's all I know.

You can not put converters on our year trucks for many reasons, one being they do not run clean (14.7) enough and the extra fuel will foul the converter, cause it to clog, and turn into a very hot time bomb that will either set the truck on fire or kill the engine.
The biggest disadvantage to me is they can clog solid while off-road and leave you stuck. Also, even though they have a mat on the bottom to prevent thermal shock when they hit water, if yours is very hot and gets dunked in a stream, there is a good chance it will fracture and you will start blowing honeycomn out the tail pipe. Plus, as someone mentioned, they will set the grass on fire.
