I got my 4.10's, FMS Locker, and the fluid sitting in my room now! They will be going in next week, and I'll try and take some pics and stuff for you beforehand!
Write a check definately. There are like 3 or 4 tools I don't even have that are absolutely crucial to doing it yourself. One of the tools is $50.00 at a local auto parts store...the depth gauge that makes it run smoothly. The cruddy thing is that even if I did have it, I've never used one in my life.
It's not too bad though. This guy who has been doing it for 20+ years is going to do the entire install for $250.
I'm going to try to load them this weekend when I have the time. It's nothing you've never seen before...just the ring and pinion gear and the limited slip for the differential. I have Castrol Synthetic fluid for the rear end...I am now going to buy some Ford friction modifier for the rear-end to make it last a little longer. I don't know how much it is, but it can't be too bad.

Thats EXACTLY what I said when I needed to replace the metal key on the supercharger. Because its a specialty size, it costs 19 dollars. For a KEY! Hehehe.
Yup, I can't wait to get it done. I have everything ready, I just gotta wait 'till this weekend is over. It's probably gonna take 2 days to do, but I'm hoping he can knock it out in one. Wish me luck!
dude joe rock on!
you'll soon be a traction king.....
I was thinking of the same setup, but with 4.56's after I lift my truck and throw on the 35's. But i was going to try to tackle the job myself. It won't be for a long time, since it'll be awhile before I can afford anything like that, especially after a lift, tires and wheels. Let us know how it turns out!
Ooo...tackle a rear diff change on our trucks yourself? It's pretty tough dude. The reason I wouldn't want to do it myself is because if you don't set the "backlash" of the gears and depth perfectly, you'll screw your gears totally up, and it will have all been for nothing. That's what made me go to a mechanic. I don't doubt at all you can do it, but if you can talk yourself out of it, don't do it.
I will ask a silly question: when you put the 4.10's in, what will you gain? What is the benefit of the 4.10's, compared to the stock gears? I don't know any of this stuff and I'm curious.
4.10's make you accelerate much faster than our 3.55's or 3.08's do. Basically, they spin your tires faster. Pretty, they make your low end a TON stronger, faster, tougher, and meaner than ever. The only downside is that you loose a little bit on the MPG and your top speed will be a little bit lower...but low enough to even make a difference.
Basically, let's say you run a quarter mile at 16.5. If you put the gears/LSD in then your quarter mile would theoretically drop to around 15.8ish. That's how much difference they make. I went to Houston to the Drag Strip and the first race I had was against a 4.6 RCAB 5 speed truck. We both had an Intake, Chip, and Exhaust (of course he had a full Lightning cat-back exhaust vs. my dumped flowmaster). He also had 4.10's and an LSD. HE RAN A 14.9.
