Remote Start and door lock actuator

Hi, I was wondering, what is a good remote start kit for a '00 F-250 5.4l auto 4x4 w/ the remote for lock/unlocking the doors and to activate the horn. I would like fairly good range and maybe the remote lock/ unlock on the remot e so i dont have to carry a rround 2 remotes. Any help is appretiated. Also one other question, where can i find a good quality door lock actuator to buy, but not for the price of an arm and leg. Thanks again, Garrett

Directed Electronics makes and add-on starter unit for any vehicle with keyless entry-power locks. I am planning on putting one of these in my incoming Excursion.

As it was explained to me, you use your factory remotes, and press the lock button three times. The third "pulse" is sensed by the unit and activates the starter. Pressing another three times causes it to shut off.

If the range of your factory remotes is all you need...this is the cheapest way to go.

my ford dealer wants $700 to install a remote starter on my 03 f250 4x4! I want one but I refuse to pay that much, I also dont want to do anything anywhere else cause I dont want any warranty issues later down the road or ford blaming something on a third party installation...I guess for now I'll have to start it by hand and go back inside to let it warm up...yay....

jlstorm---the dealers play that warranty game all the time. The law says that unless it is proven that the added on part (or it's installation) CAUSED the problem...they cannot void your warranty.

In many cases, the dealers install aftermarket equipment anyway.

The remote start I spoke of above should cost under $300 installed. I am going to put one in my Excursion when it gets here. (Due tomorrow!!!) The remote start is around $250, plus you'll need a item that tells the PATS system that it's okay to start.

I just had a Viper 791xv installed. Its gps compatable, remote start, it even has a built in turbo timer. The remote works up to a 1/4 mile away and the lcd remote lets you know everything thats going on. The alarm is about $250 but the installation can cost you from $100-$200.

I just had the same installed in my truck and the wifes car. I got the modules that roll up the windows and close the sun roof when armed and it was about $1200 total installed for both. Few things I like on it,
-1 remote can control up to 4 alarms. I use my remote and it works on the car and truck.
-Super range. I work on a Navy base and often the factory keyless remote wouldn't work. Doesn't happen with the viper.
-Turbo Timer
-I can also hit the start button on the remote while the truck is running then turn off the key and it will stay running. This is nice when you want to run into 7/11.
-Hit the arm button and it automatically rolls up the windows, closes the roof and locks the doors.
-Can also roll down the windows with remote.
-The remote has a screen on it that shows what is going on with the vehicle IE runing etc...

I looked at Ford first and they wanted more money. Also would have had 2 key phobs to carry one for locks and one for starter. They also didn't offer all of the add ons that Viper had. All in all I am very happy with this route.

The Ford wanted more money than $1200 ?!?!!?!
Wow, I'd find another dealer too...
My dealer installed the Ford Gold on mine for $450 IIRC and I think I've heard of it cheaper than that...
but I am more than happy with mine and use it all the time...

It has a simple remote where u hit the start button and not have to hit it 3 times...
it also has the turbo cooldown feature where u can pull the key and leave it running and locked...
among many other features I rarely use

I chose the ford installed version just to avoid any possible finger pointing IF something went wrong...

I paid 1200 for both vehicles with the window and sunroof mods. Not 1200 for one.

I have the Audiovox Prestige Platinum APS786 on my '01. (Came on it) Works great, like it so well I bought one (APS786T) for my wifes' Escape. The complete kit was $90 or so delivered. Going to be self installed so I can't give you a cost on installing.

Has a programable start delay for diesels, plus you can set how long the car will run, one remote will work up to 4 receivers. Also has all the alarm bells and sirens which I am not going to install if I don't have to. Has the remote open option which I will hook up to the Escapes' rear latch.

One of the nicest features is the range, with a clear shot I can start my truck from better than 800' away. I can even start it from inside my office, which is inside an all metal pole building and my truck is about 300' away.

Just to clear up what I was speaking about.

I was speaking of a remote start that uses your factory remotes. The third door lock press enables the remote start feature. I'd prefer to use factory remotes if possible, and for those that are looking for teh most affordable way to go remote start...it's a viable option.

I'm not sure what my new truck will get, as factory remote range will be a factor.

Just make sure the key fob works with the ignition running. My '01 fobs don't. The GEM Module controls those functions and in my case, I had to go with the remote start key fobs. Everything works great, but the aftermarket key fobs can't take the beating of the factory ones. Also, if you want great range, (you'll be sorry if you don't ) you need to get a remote start system that has a super heterodyne antenna. I've had high and low dollar remote starts in my vehicles over the years and you don't always get what you pay for. I currently am having great luck with a cheap crimestopper Cool Start RS900VI I got off eBay.

Good luck in your decision, there are a ton of choices out there.

Austin
