1996 Ford Explorer lock issues

I recently purchased a 1996 Ford Explorer. I have noticed that I can manually lock all the doors and the lift gate. I can automatically lock and unlock the passengers-side and the two rear doors. The lift gate and drivers door will not automatically lock with the remote or keyless entry. So, If I use the remote and hit to lock all, the passengers-side and rears door will lock, but if I open the liftagate or drivers door the alarm goes off because they will not lock. I cannot even lock or unlock the liftgate with the key. When inside and starting to drive away, the vehicle locking mechanism makes a dragged out sound to engage but only the passengers side front and both rears lock. Any ideas

It sounds like you might be experiencing two of the rather common issues with locks on the Explorer. There are multiple threads here regarding broken wires causing the rear liftgate lock to fail as well as broken wires causing the driver's door lock to fail, so rather than make one more thread on the subject, I'll suggest you search the forum for the threads. A few have some very good detail on what to look for.

If you have any trouble finding them through the search feature, post back here.
