92 ranger 4.0 code 172 question

hego fault sensor lean

The truck Idles high and rough, mileage is poor, sometimes after driving

then stopping for a few minutes the truck is hard to start. I have to floor the

pedal and it pops and wheezes before catching. Coulld this be just an o2 sensor

if so which one. Or is it more likly to be a dreaded vaccum leak?? any help

would be appreciated!

If you look in the stick titled Technical Information, you;ll find the codes. In particular http://www.tccoa.com/articles/misc/EEC4.html

From this url (tech info sticky):
172 R,C Heated oxygen sensor fault/lean bank #1

The first thing I almost always say about lean codes is check for vacuum leaks, and you should certainly do that. But I am thinking maybe even a little more that a fuel delivery problem might be at work here. Seems like sometimes your engine is not getting enough fuel, and at other times it's getting too much (when you floor the gas pedal on a Ford-fuel injected vehicle, the computer shuts off the injectors and the throttle plate allows for maximum air entry - essentially a "reverse choke" situation).

A fuel pressure test would be a great starting point toward diagnosing a fuel issue.

Has the fuel pressure regulator ever been changed? When you have trouble starting it after it sits for a little while, pull the vacuum hose off the FPR and check it for fuel.

How about the fuel filter?

hey Rock thank you for your post. I do not know if the fpr has been replaced or not
second hand truck. It has run fine for about a year then one day rough idle and surging at a stop now this intermittent trouble starting. after it gets going it still runs great. I will check fuel pressure and I cannot find a fuel filter is it hidden under the shroud at the throttle body? the 172 code is koer if that makes a diff!

The fuel filter is on the left side frame rail, more/less under the left foot of the driver, and mounted to a small bracket.

First off Thank You to those of you who replied

I checked for vac leaks, none were found. I replaced the fuel filter and the o2
sensor and I still have the same problem. My question this time, could
these symptoms be the IAC?? if so where is the iac, also this code is only
present koer no stored or koeo thanks in advance also I would like to check
the fuel pressure. where on the rail is the schrader valve?? I do not think this is
a problem as the truck runs great at speed

Ok I just read another post The other day I discovered {the hard way} that
my power booster is leaking could..... this be related to the rough idle and the
lean code?? somehow I feel as if there is a lightbulb on my head. can anyone shed some light {pun intended} on this for me.

A vacuum leak will cause a lean condition and could cause an idle problem.
