I have a 95 Ranger and from time to time it will not start. The motor will turn over, but will not start. I will keep trying and after 5-60 min. of trying it will start. I am not sure what the problem is, I have tested the spark when the motor would not start and there was nothing. Please help.
start by pulling the codes. check out the technical info thread at the top of this forum and click on pulling EEC-IV codes about halfway down. good luck.
The 95 Ranger was the first year that they used OBDII so you will need to get a scanner to pull the codes. If it was made between January and June, a lot of the standard code readers will not work. If it was made after June, just about any reader will pull the codes. That would be the first step, to see if the computer has set any codes. My first thought was the fuel pump relay, but if there is no spark that would rule it out. Try the codes first and keep us posted.
The EEC (electronic engine control) and fuel pump relays are known to cause intermittent no start problems. The next time it doesn't start, pop the hood and snap the EEC relay with your finger and try to start it. Those little buggers are only like $5 if you need a new one. Let us know what you find.

Neighbor has a 96 2.3L exhibiting similiar no start problem....has been very cold (below zero for daytime high) so I have not tried it since it failed this last time.
So...is that EEC relay in the "box" near firewall on driver's side.? If so..is that also the same box that houses the fuel relay? If not...where and what does it look like?
Thanks...this is a 1996 so has fuse box with three relays within AND another box alongside...between it and fender...that has two more. Rotated all (same number). Nothing is marked of course. No manual either.
Pulling the Idleair control valve not fun...sits at rear of manifold, bolts face to firewall, wire harness in way for lower, 12 above zero. All of that and 142M miles...not plugged up as many have noted. I cleaned anyway...back on tommorrow.
