If it's instigated through the 1-800-waah help line (from the factory down, not the dealership up), it usually goes pretty quickly and smoothly unless the issues are so minor they can be resolved at a dealer level. Piston slap, for instance, is deemed a normal situation- annoying, but doesn't impact the durability/reliability of the vehicle (or so I'm told) . Transmission failures, electrical gremlins, and paint flaws (major) are not. The reality is these "problem" vehicles are few and far between- no solice for the customer that bought a model that's 99% perfect, and he/she got the 100th vehicle. I'm sure a lot of us have been there. While a few buybacks are because of "lemon laws," the majority that I've seen are simply "customer goodwill" offers of either a buyback or a trade into a like vehicle. This applies to the original owner only- 2nd/3rd owners are playing in a whole different ballpark.
