my 87 2.9 ranger has a real bad problem. It was running just fine one day the next i go and try to start it. It started running really ruff, smelling like gasoline really bad and smoking like crazy. Flooding really bad. I believe the fuel injectors are open. What would cause this? Anyone have this problem before? or anyone have any ideas?
Fuel prssure regulater will cause this. Map sensor also. Rare, but had one with a loose ground wire near the fuel rail make one do this. Took awhile to find that one.

i had an 84 ranger 2.0 and it made a loud knocking sound one day and started smoking real bad. never figured out what it was. could have been from my lack of emmisons on it.
I had the same problem on my '87. The diaphram in the fuel pressure regulator ruptured and the injectors failed open. Got me to where I need to be, but huge clouds of white smoke and strong gas smells. After I stopped the engine, she vapor locked and that was it till I got her fixed.
My husband hasn't had time to work or try to fix the ford ranger but all this info will be appreciated. and very helpful I'll get back with the forum when He finds and locates the problem. I will be sure to post what the actual problem was.

Love the Ford Ranger
but for now have to drive the Exployer
we got the ranger fixed today. It took my husband all of 30 min to get it fixed. It was the fuel pressure regulator. Thanks for all the info and input you all gave me. It helped. He replaced it and then changed the oil and it works great.
