I have a 69 F-250 with a 390 automatic and a relatively new factory rebuilt 2100 style carburetor. I have put two kits in it and it's set to specs- runs like a top. The mechanical fuel pump is pushing about 5 lbs. The problem seems to be after shutting it off it will sometimes flood enough to enter the crankcase. It may not be so bad with this cooler weather or possibly something I've done has lessened the problem slightly. The motor runs on the cool side.
I still have the spacer between it and the manifold that connects to the cooling system. I'm wondering if that's making it warm enough to cause problems with this newer gas.
Not feeling like the Lone Ranger here but hoping someone can help find a solution to this. TIA!
Gas coming out of the bowl vents after the engine is shut off usually is the gas percolating and expanding. I would try by-passing the water spacer plate. Especially if you have a bad heater core already by-passed.
Thanks Jeff, it seems logical to me also. The heater core is good but I doubt if it cools that line significantly.
Well at least all the water in the heater hoses is shared with the heater core then. At 1st I thought to mention one of the later model Ford truck thick carb to EGR spacer gaskets for under your carb. They insulate engine heat from the carb a lot better. Like what was part number E5HZ9C477A. But since it is winter now and you are in MO, you may need that carb to get some heat.
Thanks for the replies. I had thought about the phenolic spacer Jared and probably will get around to installing one. I think for now I will do as Jeff originally suggested and bypass my existing spacer to see if it improves. The way this gas is acting there will probably be enough heat under the breather to satisfy the carb. I believe that there is one of those gaskets either above or below the spacer. I'll look closer tomorrow.
Thanks for the picture. I looked up the part number after your last post and saw what you were talking about. Just went out and looked and do not have the thicker one like that. What's there is probably 1/16" or 3/32" at the most. I may have one stuck away here someplace or if not I saw Rockauto has them for $4 to 5.00
