Has anyone tried? Absolutely, and successfully. Depending on what kind of "posi" you want, you can get just about any kind of traction aid for the ford 8.8: Spool or mini spool (or some have welded the spider gears), selectable locker, carrier replacement "auto" locker (Detroit type locker), lunchbox locker, limited slip -- it's all available. In fact, 3.73 rear ends often came from the factory as a limited slip unit. At this age it probably needs the clutch pack replaced. What kind of "posi" do you want?
Thank you all for the replies. I can tell you want I do not want and that is if one tire spins the other will grab. I would like to have both grab equally. Leaving equal marks. Like in my 69 396 Chevelle Super Sport.
"have both grab" under what conditions? Limited slip is usually good enough for this sort of thing, except when one wheel doesn't have any traction (ie, one wheel in the air and the other on the ground or one wheel on ice). Locker is really the only way to guarantee that, under all conditions, equal power goes to each wheel. It still comes back to what exactly do you want to do with this?
BTW, did you verify that your rear end doesn't already have the LS carrier?
Meaning I want both tires to leave equal tread marks under a burn out on the road or in the dirt. Or If one tire sits up in the air and turns the other one on the ground will turn along with it generating movement.
I've never, ever, had any trouble with any LS with one tire on ice and the other one on the ground. Any properly working LS will send power to the tire with the most traction, regardless the situation, with the exception of one wheel in the air. Light application of the e-brake often solves that problem.
LS units are a great choice for the every day Joe-sixpack, and you can do some good wheeling with a properly set up LS unit.
Keep in mind that if you change the rear gear ratio, you must change the front to the proper ratio!!
You can find LS carriers by the boat load for the 8.8'' rear on ebay for less that $100 including shipping.
I've purchased many OEM units off ebay for various Ford trucks, and I'd be willing to put them up against any aftermarket clutch type LS unit.
