I'm looking at a 98 explorer EB w/ 88k on it (5.0), looks nice , they want $9,800 for it, what problems should I be on the look out for.

Possibly the diff, but if it isn't howling by now it will go the distance.

Mines a V6, so I'll spare you as I think the V8 and it's tranny have far fewer issues than the sweet 6 cylinder models. Do check the tranny for shifting and how the fluid looks.

Driver door handle breakes off inside the door, makes a rattle.

Power window gets lazy.

PDL switch on mine has given up. (I'm under 80 k by the way)

Figure on new shocks. Check the threads, some folks report very good results with certain shocks.

My radiator popped an unfixable leak, $290 or so, install was pretty easy.

Parking brakes: The parking brake is "drum in hat" and the shoes are delicate little flowers that cost a fortune at Ford. Shop around to replace those if need be or at next rear brake job. Ask about it before they start work and destroy them trying to get the rear rotor off.

Twitchy handling. Weak roof. Do not roll this truck over. Avoid sharp turns at 75mph with 8 or 10 unbelted children in the truck for example.

Twitchy handling: Try 35psi, but feel free to go down to 30 if it feels better.
I find 35 to be really twitchy, but I like it.

Blend door, see the thread up top about that.

Driver seat bolts are wimpy, check for wiggle.

For price, run it through

for a comparison. Folks say KBB is high.

There was a similar thread here recently, scroll down for more delightful descriptions of things we've found while Exploring.

After many months of looking, I just picked up a 99 eddie bauer, with 58,000, original owner.

V8/AWD.

Car is in mint shape, not a scratch dent or ding on it...paid 8500.00

And yes, I agree, it will need shocks!!

Which ones are the best?
