Now fellas, here is a unique problem. I bought this '76 F250 4x4 with a 35 year old camper for fishing trips. No, the 250 the camper nor the fishing is the problem, as yet... The problem started with deiseling. I went to higher octane, change the timing; change it back again went back to a lower octane. Ultimately I came back here. Somebody suggjested when messing with deiseling check the air-cleaner to be sure the it's getting air to the carb. Sure as hey, the dog-gone spring end of the thermostate is missing. Now guys...where is a fellow gonna get one of them dang things.
Oh, this rig has 428 with a RV cam in it. I haven't gotten to figurin' out what 428 it is. I'll get to that later...
Probably the one on the snorkel of the air cleaner.
This is what opens & closes the opening for warm air over cold air for faster engine warm-up & minimum choke time
Good luck finding one new.
You will need an old one to match it.
OffRoader...in the throat of the air-cleaner there is a thermostate which when heats up to about 150 degrees opens the flapper on the air-cleaner. The thermostate is activated by a plunger which controls a spring loaded deely to the flapper. The spring loaded deely is missing.
oh duh......sorry, wasnt thinking about a stock air cleaner, that went right over my head.....i got rid of my stock air cleaners when i swapped out my motorcrafts for holleys, you might consider doing that ejfitco, properly tuned with the timing set correctly would liven it up, and improve mpg....one other thing, if you have a duraspark II ignition and it isnt set exactly right, you will loose performance drasticly....i put a post of how to set the DS II earlier...ill see if i can locate it......

do you have points or the duraspark II ignition???If you have the duraspark II ignition, this how you set it up.......unhook your vacume advance and plug it... now get a timing light and set your timing between 12 and 14 degrees BTDC at 650 rpms...my factory sticker calls for 12 degrees... it just depends on if i want power(14 degrees) or economy(12 degrees)....but thats just a starting point you can adjust either way 2 degrees at a time between test drives to find what you like better....also.. when your engine is off and the #1 piston is at TDC turn the crank so the timing mark is on the degree you prefer and open the distributer...under the rotor bug there are 8 prongs sticking out from the center... one of them must be lined up perfectly with the electronic pick up inside... if it isnt move the distributer until it is..half a tooth off can be up to 7 1/2 degrees out of time....the duraspark II igniton in most ford trucks is not adjustable.. it only has one position that will work completly right..it took me a long time to figure that out...no mechanic anywhere that ive been knows about that... thats why alot of old fords run crappy and spew black smoke and backfire...just because of the timing..try that...i believe its the answer you need....it made my 460 smoke these new camaros off the line...and anything else for that matter
You can get a later model vacuum operated air cleaner assy. There should be a few million in the junkyard. Always run a thermostatically controlled air cleaner set up properly with heated air intake and cold air inlet. The aftermarket open air cleaners are bad news. They pull in hot air from under the hood in the warmer months. In the winter the cold air causes carb icing.
