I scrolled through several pages to see if this topic had been used before and either I didn't go far enough or it's been awhile since brought up. I'm volunteer in our town/township, joined up in '90 when I was 37 after we bought our house here. They had a sign out front asking for volunteers so I joined up. Wasn't the first time I volunteered to do something that could leave a mark.
So how 'bout it, paid/volunteer smokeeaters out there?
Hi Ford Louisville,
First off, let me welcome you to FTE! And yes I am a professional firefighter...25 years of eating smoke and saving lives! Started like you as a volunteer fresh out of high school and been doing it ever since. Funny thing is that growing up I was never one of those "I wanna be a fireman" type kids...it just kinda happened!
Now, I can't imagine working a regular 8-5 job! So be careful, this "hero" stuff can be addicting! LOL!
Many years as a volunteer. I still or may be listed on about 10 volunteer depts. and 2 or 3 paid depts for legal reasons. But my wife is a paid fireman/Paramedic with all most 30 years in. She is counting the number of shifts to retire!
Yup I am I was a Cadet for two years and just alst month I became a Firefighter. I love it dont know what I would do without it, Im going to make a career out of it. When I gratuate in June I am going to take fire service technology for 2 years and go do career firefighting.
I had just over 10 years in the f.d. but had to resign because out here you must live in the town in which you serve and the demands of my paying job just got to extreme to handle both. It was a much harder decision than I ever imagined and I miss it every day. I still go and visit the guys and girls about once a month and oggle over new equipment as if its my own. I also joined the ambulance (which are run seperate out here) did that for just short of 3 years as an EMT-D. Also was a enjoyable venture but in my heart I am a firefighter, always will be.
Wildland firefighter here.... started with the Forest Service in 85. I'm a little broken now, but still a member of an Type I Interagency Incident Managment Team responding to wildfire events throughout the county and recently to "other than wildland fire events" such as the space shuttle event in Texas and the 911 Pentagon event.
I'm no longer is a firefighter position, but I keep my quals up to date for various assignments.
I started as a vollunteer back in 93' then went to paid in 94' and started as a Fed Fireman in 98. I have a total of 11 years in the service and love it. I followed my fathers footsteps.
1st off let me also welcome you to FTE! I am a volunteer firefighter and have been for 8 years in WV. I started as a junior member in high school, and the became a regular member when i hit the age of 18. I currently live in oh and was looking to join the dept in the little town i live in.
