Are you near Hurricane? I've got a buddy on their VFD there. He made a helluva rescue on a little boy from a house trailer getting swept away by high water several years ago. It made the national news network but he refused to be interviewed. OoooRah!

I was a firefighter for about 4 years before I left the dept. I regret that choice and when I get back from Iraq I'll be getting back into it.

I've been a volunteer in out county district for just over a year, and have loved every second of it! I'm going to hopefully make it my career, I am currently taking my FF1 courses and hope to take my EMT course in the spring. Currently I am stationed at one of our "out-stations" so we don't get alot of calls, mostly medical assists witht he ambulance but its all been a great experience for me.

P.S. - Does anyone have any advice for me? thanks!

Started as a vol. FF/EMT in upstate NY in '94. Became a paid Firefighter/Paramedic in '01. However, I resigned to move down to TX with my wife due to her job. Resigning was very difficult. It was the greatest job I ever had.

Started my volunteer career in 1984 was a FF/First responder and Station Engineer when I was forced to retire (medical) in 2002. Still carry my credentials, badge and membership card as a lifetime member of the department. Sure do miss it!

When I first got to my dept we had a 93 F350 (crew cab, 4x4, long bed) we used as a brush truck. It had a 7.3l non turbo diesel. We later replaced it with 2 GMC Top Kicks. Nice upgrade, but I liked the F350 better. It was more mauverable and able to get under low trees easier. But it is a lot easier and safer to work off the back of the Top Kicks than on the skid unit we had in the Ford. They still use the Ford for the Chief's truck.

Keep on studying the in's and out's of firefighting and if your department is paying for your training, get as much as you can. Most state academy's have outreach programs via computers or on site. If you have a training officer on the department, be sure to ask for their assistance if your goal is a paid career. Most city departments w/paid personnel have websites that will announce upcoming tests for hirees and they may also have "internships." Our EMS Captain and a Fire Lt. have both acquired fulltime positions this way. Good luck in your quest.

Had a 2 story with attic, ballon construction, wood frame, total of 3 apartments, well involved srtucture fire last pm. No injuries. Two showers later and I can still smell the smoke. Fire probably started on stove as the occupants were "cooking". It was a shame it was right beside the station and we saved it. Now we hope that it will be torn down but that is unlikely, just another eye sore. Oh by the way did I mention it was below 20 degree's. I hate fires in the winter. Well I guess it is nice to have a love hate relationship in your life.

I'm still licensed as an Illinois EMT Basic, but didn't get into firefighting.

Where I used to run, fire departments would not run rescue. "If you don't smell smoke leave us alone!" - I was on the rescue squad. I did extrication, all that jazz. You can keep the fire hose, gimme a defibrillator, a combi-tube, and a oil-driven set of spreaders any day.

One of the runs I went on was subject of an A&E Bill Kurtis documentary, I'll never forget that night. I also was called out on many fatal crashes, and one was 2 days before thanksgiving where some elderly folks tried to make it to visit other family members and didn't make it. Had a 3 week period where there were a rash of suicides by hanging or self-inflicted gunshot. All in a county of 5500 people in downstate Illinois.

I am a member of a volunteer fire dept. in southern IL. I have been on the dept. for about a year and a half. We have two ford pumpers, and an E350 w/ a 7.3 NA. Although its not a ford I do like our brush truck, it is a 1974 IH 3/4 ton 4x4 with dana 70 front and rear. Our other trucks include an old military dodge powerwagon, two mack tankers, and a kenworth pumper.

Hello

I am a Union Firefighter Local 524 and been doing it for over 10 years. In fact I am at work right now replying to this post.... We ran over 3100 calls last year and we are ahead of that this year. Thats not alot compared to big departments but it is enough for us to see a bit of everything. You take the good with the bad but I still look forward to work every day..I also can not imagine doing anything else.....

Be Careful
Luke

Well we did finally sell our home this year, but the timing stunk. I just bought a new house when I found out that Greely was hiring and also I have a new addition now that I want her to stick around to let Grandparents spoil her. But things are starting to happen down here and there may be another opprotunity.
