I wanted to let you all know that our area has had several Firefighter accidents, mostly apparatus related. A Pleasantville Fr was run over Christmas eve at a structure 28 and 3 City of Newark Fr's were critically injured when their apparatus collided responding to what turned out to be a false alarm. Hope your Christmas was safer.
Retired for the past few years, not by choice but due to injury. Started as jr. at a volunteer dept. in 79 and as soon a I was old enough got a job with a paid dept. Even though I retired the guys I worked with are still like family members and I miss it everyday. Stay safe and enjoy it as long as you can because once you leave you will definatly miss it.
When I lived in Shasta County in the early '80s I was an EMT-I and training officer for our little voluteer FD, when I moved to Mendocino County I looked into joining the local VFD in my new town, they showed absolutely no interest in having me join, they had a little clique set up just the way they wanted it and didn't want any outsiders. (Very clannish community, if you didn't go back at least 3 generations there, you were an outsider and could never be otherwise) Besides that, I lived about 4 miles out of town and my response time wouldn't have been the greatest, so I let it drop. Still miss it, haven't looked into it here where I'm living now. Probably couldn't handle it anymore due to physical deterioration. TD
I was a firefighter for several years. Had to give it up, but got my son into it before I signed off. He joined in 90, the year I before I got out. Now my daughter, (who is studying to be RN), is going to take Firefighter I classes while she waits to get into nursing school. I miss it, but it wouldn't be safe to go back. Anybody reading this thinking about joining a department...stop thinking....sign up...the rewards are boundless....
I have been in the fire service since Jan. of '93. I am a Sgt. and EMT-D for Central Campbell FD in Northern KY. I am a volunteer, but our dept. is a combination dept. We have around 30 active members, 10 of which are paid, including the Chief. We have 3 pumpers, awaiting delivery of a 4th, 1 rescue truck, 1 102' arreal, 2 Freightliner squads and 1 E350 squad, 1 regular pickup, 1 pickup set up for brush fires, a Suburban, and the Chief has an Explorer. We run out of 2 stations in Highland Heights and Cold Spring, KY.
Paid call firefighter back 1968 to 1977 in Massachusetts then became a full time police officer in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Then after retirement did volunteer ambulance work 1997 to 2000 here in New York.
