Hi Heavnbound,
I just came back from the Great State of Alaska in July of 2003. Worked down south of Fairbanks at Fort Greely for a year as a fireman. I wish I could have stayed, I was unable to sell my house down here in the states so I had to come back. I met a lot of good people that I miss a lot.

Hello, I am a volunteer Firefighter/EMT in our town, we have 45 Sq. miles in our Fire dist. and around 5000 people.
We have 34 members, 2 Squads, 2 Pumpers, 1 tanker, 1 weedfire truck. I am proud to say we are purchasing a 2005 F-350 4 dr. 4x4 6.0 diesel, for a 2nd weed fire unit.
I had some input as to what truck we bought, and am glad we decided on the Ford!
I serve as the Sec/Tres. (a thankless job) but I wouldn't give it up!!
Anyone who has an interest in the Fire Service should contact their local Dept. and see if they need help, I have found it to be one of the most rewarding things I can do for my neighbors, just being there in someones time of need makes you feel good.

Been a ff since 1988. Also have 3 brothers and one nephew on the same department. Oldest brother has 30 years, next has 25, then 20, and myself 16. Nephew is a fng but we all start somewhere. We have 3 engines, 1 rescue, 1 brush truck, 1 boat, and 1 als ambulance. Spent the last 3 years specing and recieving new engine. Spent $350,000 on an American Lafrance. We took delivery in April, it has been back to the factory 3 times for a total of 4 months down time and it has to go back again. What a p.o.s. this thing has been so far. If they every get all the bugs worked out it will be nice. Just very disappointing at this point.
Hi Sweet34,
Well you should try again to sell your house..my dept is hiring! We need a few firefighters who know what it's like in Alaska and love it anyway!
Volunteer firefighter since 91. There are always good times and bad times, and unfortunately sad times.. but I wouldn't trade the experience and the joy of being a firefighter for anything. Stay safe,
Wow, it's great to read all of your replys and I'm very priviledge to be part of the Fire/EMS Service with you all. Yeah, I was never a "I'm going to be FF kid", heck the rural area I'm orignally from never had a VFD until the late 70's early 80's. But now that I'd been awakened by the beast, I respect it and hate it. They ask me to be Chaplain back in '96 (I usually pray while inroute to the emergency and someone thought I was a preacher) I accepted after finding out I didn't have to be ordained but our church "endorsed" me.
We have A Ford 800 1800 gal. tanker, Pierce Saber Rescue, a Ford Cabover Engine, a Ford F350 Powerstroke Diesel Brushtruck, a Ford Squad and a International heavy squad.
As Chaplain, I'm available to any Brother or Sister in the Service. I'm not a preacher, I just love people. Thank you for replying. Please be safe. Watch for signs of flashover and kill it.
I'm an Explorer in a little town south of Dayton Ohio. Our department has a Ford ambulance and an 87 F-350 Brush Truck with a 6.9 diesel in it but we're about to buy an 05 F-350.
I became a firefighter in high school. Graduated the fire academy and arson school a couple years later. Went to EMT school because I had too for the job.
Kinda injured myself on the job. Lasted on the truck as long as I could. Worked EMS only for a while......till I got tired of not doing what I really wanted.
Took a hiatus.....now work communications for an EMS system.
I'm a volunteer FF, only been on for 2-3 months though. Haven't been to any fires yet because our station dosen't get many calls. As of a couple of weeks ago we are now "paid on call". We get $7.78 every time we resond to a fire or cover the station during a fire call. We even get paid to go to the meeting/training every Monday! $7 bucks dosen't sound like a lot...until you don't have a job.
