I don't see why you couldn't get a $15 Sunpro tach and wire it up with some nice jumpers with aligator clips on the end. You'd just clamp them to the battery posts for power and one to the coil or tach output. Put a high powered magnet on the base and you could stick it anywhere while you tune the engine. That is if you can't find an actual handheld unit.
My Digital VOM will work also. The cheapo engine analyzer Dwell/Tach meters are $35. I have a handheld D/T unit that is about 35 years old that still works.
Well if thats what your using it for, and you don't already have a dial back to zero timing light, you could get one of those with a tach. I bought one for setting timing and idle speed on harleys. Don't konw how I ever got along without it. They are kinda spendy, but well worth it to me.
I have a Tif 780 photo tachometer that works well. The only problems I have with it is it won't read the tape on silver colored pulleys, have to paint them flat black, and if you get more than 45* off the reflective tape it looses the signal. You don't hook it up to any thing, just put the reflective tape on what your trying to read. Its great for small engines.
I use a mac tool #ettach smartach + wireless tach and spark analyzer.I am not sure who manufacture's it but i have seen them at sears(avail other than on tool truck)real handy tach and kv reader, just hold over engine and it reads spark pulses.works on 2 or 4 cycle 1-10 cyl.it's real accurate too
