Instrument cluster swap
I have a 1997 F250HD with out a tack. I was wondering if a cluster from a pickup with a tack would work? Would all the wiring be their?
thanks

If you do not have a pickup what do you have?
Yes from another F-series truck from say 1996-1997 should work.

Not that I believe. I think it's 92-94, 95-96/97 but there may be another split there.
I should have one from a 97. PM me and I'll let you know when I get to my garage later.

I just did this swap but between a 93 truck and 95 cluster. I found the pin out diagram on this site and simply swapped the necessary wires to account for different pin out positions between the cluster yrs. It works as is should and having a tach is nice. I kept the original speedometer so the mileage and tire size calibration would be correct. The pin out diagrams are here:

Note that there is more to the difference between 1995 & 1996 than the pin-outs.
There is a difference with the RABS parts in the cluster.
This all was covered in another thread on this Forum.

Sorry about giving that info. You should get a cluster from the same yr as your truck.

Or would it be just easier to add a external tach?

It is easier to just get a cluster from a 1996 or 1997 truck at pick-an-pull, swap out the speedometer/odometer center part and put it in your truck.
