Lower ratio power steering box???

I love my Ranger, but the number of turns lock to lock in this truck is just ridiculous. In slow moving traffic, when I have to make a sudden turn into another lane, I have found myself really cranking on the steering wheel to get the truck straightened back out. This stock steering gear has to go!!

Does anyone know of a lower ratio steering box for a 95 Ranger, preferably one that is in the neighborhood of 2.5-3 turns lock to lock?? Anything that will bolt right up?

I don't know of any steering boxes like that. Most are 4 turns lock to lock. You have to keep in mind that when you reduce the turns your steering becomes super sensative. You see something in the road and turn your wheel a little but the tires turn a bunch . . . this means you swerve, roll, and die = BAD! Many states have laws regarding the maximum number of turns lock to lock, I don't know that any states have minimums. But it seems most all of them use a 4 turn box. Is this what you have now?

Probably...I haven't bothered to count it though.

Most other cars I have had have usually been about 2.5-3 turns lock to lock. It is more sensitive, but not as twitchy as you'd think. Most Ford passenger cars have steering racks like that.

"In slow moving traffic, when I have to make a sudden turn into another lane"
"Most other cars I have had" equals "a 95 Ranger"

Dude, it's a truck, not an indy car. And why are you driving like a madman in slow traffic? It only causes accidents. I look for crazy drivers to smash into my truck. That is how I get my funding for the projects! j/k Sorry, us fat lazy Americans just have to turn the wheel one more time.

No, I'm just used to driving cars with more responsive steering. I never claimed to be driving like a madman, but sometimes when a lane opens up and you're in traffic that is a dead halt, you have to turn the wheel a bit to get over. It is just a bit herky-jerky getting the truck to straighten back out after going all the way to the lock on one side, and basically having to crank the wheel all the way back over.

BTW, "most other cars I've had" equals 3 Mustangs (soon to be a 4th, an 84 SVO), an Acura Integra, 94 Escort and a 88 Bronco II (for whatever reason I don't remember it being as bad, perhaps the shorter wheelbase vehicles use a different gear...in which case I just answered my own question). Those are only the cars I've owned personally and doesn't count my parents cars' from when I was younger.

But it has nothing to do with being lazy, I just like the quicker steering response.

Except for the bronco-2,all the cars you have driven had rack-n-pinion steering .

While that is true, you can still get steering boxes in different ratios. The fact that the other vehicles had rack and pinion steering is a moot point. You can get rack and pinion steering gears that are just as sloppy as the steering box in my Ranger.

I was looking to see if anyone had any suggestions, not comments from the peanut gallery.

Swap the steering parts from the car/cars that you like. Put them under your ranger. Post some pics when you are done. Or you could put splice your ranger body into a mustang! Wicked! More pics please!

How mature.

I ask a relatively simple question, and then the *******s on the board come out.

Question for ya...do you actually have any idea how the steering boxes on these trucks work in the first place? I gather that you have no clue apart from "I turn the wheel, and then the box turns the pitman arm". That would explain your total lack of understanding of this topic.

In the future, if you have nothing helpful to add to the discussion, keep your dumb, immature comments to yourself.

In the future, don't complain about how sad you are at driving and want better. Shut up and make it better. If you can build a better vehicle or just a steering box, go to it. Break out your autoCAD and the mill. Remember, Jesus and I love you.
