The machine flush doesn't change the filter or clean out the particles trapped in the pan. Drop the pan. As for fluid, I'm switching to Mobil 1 synthetic on my next change.

I always drain the pan, clean and inspect, replace the filter, add 4 quarts of fluid, then use the flush machine. The machine isn't necessary to do a flush, it just makes it easier to do. We use Synergyn Super Shift synthetic ATF. Synthetic ATF will tolerate heat better and allow extended service intervals.

I'm about to flush mine, but have a question about this procedure. If you pump out the fluid from the return line at the tranny, isn't there a period of time that your running the engine/tranny with the pan empty? This doesn't do any damage?

There should still be enough residual fluid on the internals to provide sufficent lubrication for a period of time. As long as you shut down when you start to get air, you won't have any problems.

Much thanks! One more 'dumb' question. When you refill the pan after pumping it out, do you start it up with the hose still in the bucket, or do you re-connect the cooling line to start it up?

You only remove the hose and reconnect when you have completed the flush procedure. Until then just leave the hose in the bucket. It simplifies things if you have a helper up top to start and stop the engine.

Thanks again. I'd hate for my ignorance to cost me a tranny.

Better safe than sorry. Read and follow the directions, take your time and you shouldn't have any problems.

I used the method described in the post above a couple of weeks ago and it worked like a charm. I did not change the filter this time so it went really fast.

NOTE: get a tranny filler funner if you do not have one. You have to hook it up to each bottle but makes the job clean.
