Hi, My grandpa has a old lionel train set from the 30's, and he has two locomotives that dont work. One the rollers that pickup the electricity from the middle track is very worn, and the other is tempermental and dosnt work all the time. Where is a good place to buy replacement parts/ send them in to be fixed? I'm fixing them for him because he tends to be cheap and probably wont do it right, so i offerd to fix them up. Both of them are missing the front little wheels and one is missing both. The model's are 259 E and 229.
Ryan,
There are definitely some choices you have. You can locate an authorized Lionel repair center. Even though they are old, there are new old stock parts out there or reproduction parts that can get those locomotives running like new. Another place you can ask this question is the O Guage Railroading online forum located here: http://ogaugerr.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x They have alot of great info and people who can easily point you in the right direction
I still have the whole set of Lionel freight trains my dad got me for christmas 1957 all in great condition. It came with the big transformer that will run four trains with the whistle and reverse switches. I remember him telling me that the whole set with tracks and transformer cost $69.00 at the time. About 15 years ago I saw a locomotive very simular to mine from the same year in a hobby shop for $500.00 and that didn't include the coal car that has the whistle in it. I went in to get smoke tablets and found out they stopped making them and only carry it in liquid form now. The liquid doesn't last as long but makes good smoke.
