Anyone here ever restore any tractors. Just today my dad decided he wanted to restore an old "H" tractor of ours. This was one of my grandpa's favorite tractors, and he had bought it brand new. Well, my grandpa passed away a little over a year ago and dad decided he wanted to restore his dad's favorite tractor.
So today I started stripping it down. First to come off was the middle portion of the hood, then the cracked manifold, carbeurator, air cleaner, etc. I have a parts list about a mile long right now, and was wondering if anyone has ever bought parts for this kind of a project over the internet, if so where at? I'm going to see if their prices beat the local Case dealer.
Thanks, and lets hear about your guys' restorations if you have ever done one. Sorry if this isn't in the right forum, didn't know where else to put it.
I havent personaly, but my Dad has restored plenty. He favored JDs and Fords. I dont know where he got his parts but most of it was done before the internet was big. I think he's only done 2 or 3 since then. Hes got a bunch of magazines and catalogs for old tractors. I'll ask him where on the net he went for the last couple projects. I'm almost positive though that it will be cheeper than the dealer.
I completely restored a Ford 8N some years back. Came out great! Even made the cover of a regional classified magazine.
For parts and info, try www.ytmag.com They have quite a website devoted to most all makes of old tractors...hence the name "Yesterday's Tractor". They have message boards that may prove to be quite helpful to you. I'm on there alot on the Ford board trying to help out anyone I can. (I've been turning wrenches at a (formerly Ford) New Holland dealership for the last 15 years).
Old tractors are cool. Wish I could make a living restoring the old Fords...
I've never worked on a tractor, but will suggest looking for the magazine Antique Power . They have a lot of neat articles and lots of ads which could be of help.
Hey guys thanks for the info. Yeah I got it tore down pretty good tonight. Gonna call a few of the local Case dealers tomorrow and see what they can do for prices, then look around on the net. I have to have it done by the end of June so I better get lookin and ordering parts!
Try www.agriculture.com from there you will get on a chat forum about restoration of old machinery-- can't remember the direct www. com but agriculture will get you there.
i have been restoring a farmall cub and a massey ferguson 180. been to busy to work on them lately but many parts are available through a company called "wengers" they have an excellent catalog. phone #1-800-451-5240 or OR www.wengers.com
My uncle did my granddad's M Farmall. It was his first tractor and one of the first in the county. Granddad is still around and was able to confirm after my uncle was finished that he got it right. I saw a video that documented what he did. After he got it finished, he plowed a field with it and his kids took it to a fair and pulled in an antique tractor pull.
I got my grandpa's H almost completely done now. Been busting my behind the last few weeks on it, just have some minor touch up to do, and paint the wheels silver inside.
Check out my gallery, I don't have many pics of it in there, but there is a before and after to give you an idea of what I did.
One of these days I'd sure like to restore a Ford 8N, 9N or the model that they had just after that. My uncle used to have a 1950 or so model that he used in his orange grove in Central Florida. I remember it as a kid, and would love to rebuild one kinda like it. If I could only find one cheap enough.
I caught tractor fever before I even thought about Ford trucks. I've restored a 1945 M widefront and have another M, an H, and a Farmall 300 waiting in the wings. They are stuck in line behind my 67 F100. www.ytmag.com has been a tremendous help for years. Lots of guys on their Farmall/IH board with tons of experience. www.binderbooks.com is an excellent source for original manuals also. You're gonna enjoy that H!
