We have a 16 year old Whirlpool microwave oven that has started to act up. After setting the run time and hitting the start button the microwave vibrates or rattles very violently for about 1-2 seconds but then works just fine. Has anyone ever experienced this or know what it might be?
I had an old Radar Range microwave years ago that looked like the front of a 57 Buick. It started doing that for a while, then it started blowing the fuse in it, then it blew the house breaker and died. It was the Magnetron going out. Cheaper to buy a new one then fix the old one if you could even get the parts any more.
I've repaired a few and one that old isn't worth repairing. The power supply is probably starting to separate, or has come loose from its mount, if its come loose you should find loose or missing screw in the bottom outside of the oven. An easy fix. The cost of the power supply, magnatron and leak detector will be more than a new oven. The new ones are a lot more efficient too. If it was an interlock switch, turntable part or lamp, then it would be worth it.
Man, 16 years old! Tell the thing to drive itself to the landfill!
I know we want things to last forever, but forever is usually not possible. 16 years for an appliance like a microwave (especially considering the technology 16 years ago) is pretty darn good.
Buy a new one. I guarantee it wil cost less than it would to fix the ancient one.
Hey that Whirrlpool makes great microwaves! ours is from 1985 and still works well. Been thinking about a new one, they only cost 200 bucks for a good one. I think our whirlpool was 400 or 500 bucks back in 85.
Sounds like a loose bearing in the fan motor, and probably kitchen grease and dust on the fan blades. A do-it-yourself project? maybe....There are very few parts in there, if you do look in the back please unplug the oven.
A repair shop will try and charge you 100 bucks just to bring it in the door.
I would just go and get a new one. You can get a pretty good one for less than $200 and with a lot more power. Even a little cheap one for $50 has more power than the ones from 16 years ago. Just a thought.
If it was an interlock switch, turntable part or lamp, then it would be worth it.
A lamp or switch yeah, but not a turntable. My wife's friend gave us a Emerson microwave with no turntable plate cause it had been broken. I called around to some appliance stores and Sears and they all wanted around $50 just for the plate. I made my own turntable plate.
Sounds like a bad kanoottin valve.I would buy a lead suit like the dentist use for X rays and use it until it dies. Then take it apart and replace the bad kanoottin valve or buy a new one.If you buy a new one, sell the lead suit on ebay.Good Luck and Have Fun! I wish I knew more about them myself, I just replaced a 98 Sharp R1490.It did similar things as yours.Repair shop said it would be cheaper to buy a new one.Well, I bought another Sharp over the range (R2120JK) because I thought the mounting bracket would be the same.Man was I wrong because everything was different. The 98 looks like brand new.I am holding onto it in hopes of running across someone that knows how to fix it,at least for a while.Sorry I wasn't any help and I hope you didn't mind the humor.
If you need Microwave Oven parts these people are the best, www.tritronics.com they have parts for other appliances too. They mail stuff out the day you order it too.
