I need to figure out what engine I have (460, 429, 390, 360 ?). There is no engine tag. It is not on the valve cover. The only number I can find is on the engine block on the passenger side #94159. I would appreciate any info.
Secondly.. Is the motor still in the original vehicle? If so, what year and vehicle is it? If not and it is just a motor, there are several things we can look at to identify it. How many valve cover bolts does it have? Where is the thermostat housing, on the block (water pump housing) or on the intake manifold? Does the intake manifold extend under the valve covers?
A few questions to answer and we will see what you got, --Mike
The engine is not in a vehicle so I don't know what year it is. I will have to go home and look at the engine to answer your questions. I will post the answers tomorrow. Thank you so much for replying.
The are 5 valve cover bolts for an FE motor which would be the 360/390 etc. The thermostat housing is on the intake manifold.
THe 351m/400 have 6 valve cover bolts and the thermostat is on the front of the block
The 429/460 have 7 valve covers bolts.
Its a good idea to get the casting number off the intake such as d4ae-9015 for example. The important part is the d4ae but it could be anything this is just an example.
first letter is decade
c=60s
d=70s
e=80s
f=90s
The second thing is the year of the decade!
d4 is 1974!
Keep in mind the 429 and 460 were based on the same block. You will want to check in with the crew on the 385 series forum to find out how to tell the differences (it's in the stroke I believe).
Thats my bad! The 351m/400 have 8 bolt valve covers. The funny thing is I had spent the last month working on a 351c and had the valves cover on and off 3 times or better.
