6.0 engine replacement

What if a 6.0 engine needs to be replaced?

What would the estimate for the job be including the "new" engine block?

Has anyone encountered the need to replace their 6.0? For all that matters I am just fishing for info.

I don't know what the freight markup to ship to you would be, that's probably not a trivial component on the issue.

Ford reman prices range from $3,500 for a bare block block to $5k for a short block, $10k for a long block, and $14k for a running drop in.

Ashville Engine will do a basic $3k short block and $5k long block, but sells upgrades (like studs or a new cam) and can top out around $10k for a long block, seems like ~$8k would get you a solid reman that's bored with an upgrade cam and studs.

Junk yard prices on the mainland seem to be $4-6k for a running A-B grade engine, but that's without a lot of the dressing, plus unknown shipping and transportation costs.

I'd guess 30-40 flag hours for labor to drop in a long block or full unit, but the rate will be what kills you. Ford would probably quote you an out the door price that would make your eyes pop out, probably more than a 10+ year old truck is worth unless it's immaculate. And if it's immaculate, why is the engine blown?

Done in my driveway. Now has about 35,000 'NEW' km on her for 795,000km total now

A very valid question indeed.

Truth be told

I am interested in this truck, but with the high miles on it, I am not sure how far down the road (no pun intended) I will need to replace the engine.

This truck is on another island and I may not be able to check it personally.

A new engine will cost more than the selling price of the truck!

DO I LOOK FOR A TRUCK WITH FEWER MILES?

I would like a truck that will be able to run B99 most of the time. This is the reason I am looking for an older truck.

Any idea what it came from before it got to the islands? Just thinking that 264k probably didn't happen out there unless it was running laps around Oahu like it was Talladega. There's no hitch in the bed, so if it's a highway truck that spent a lot of years running unloaded on the interstate in Texas/NM/Arizona, it could be in great shape still.

300k+ isn't unheard of fully stock, and the short block assembly is usually pretty robust. Unless a lifter takes out the cam bottom end problems are pretty rare, and even then most of the parts are salvageable. Heads can usually be machined pretty well the first go round. The 6.0 can take a lot of rebuilding work before you are forced to swap the block, unless a rod makes a window you can pretty much rebuild it. Factory kits are made for .010, .020, .030, and .040 overbore. It can be more cost effective to short block it if a lifter goes, but where you are shipping on parts might cover a lot of machine work.

I'd be more worried about if the transmission was serviced correctly, that part can cost just as much as a short block.

What's your projected mileage a year?

I looked at the Carfax and the truck was in Oregon for 200,000 miles, give or take. Stated that the truck was for personal use in

Oregon and the balance of the miles were business use on Maui. I am on Oʻahu and I may not make it to Maui to look at the truck.

I did notice that there was no hitch in the bed too and this maybe a good thing.

Currently I live about 5 miles from our current jobsite. But soon it will be 40-50 miles round trip daily, so 10,000 miles a year.
