Is the vibration when accelerating only? Most, but not all, vibrations under 35-40 are drive-line related.Could be u-joint or center bearing(if 2 pc.shaft) motor/trans. mount. If 4x4 doesn't work could be T/C.Might not even be related.
it only starts when i reach about 40 i unhooked the tranfer case so noone would try to put it in four wheel drive i dont think its the u joints sounds like somthing inside
Could be as simple as bad hubs. My 4x4 was intermittent and it was found that water got in one hub dried it out and rusted it in the free position. Could be the cause?????
I would check the yokes on the drive shafts, as well as the u-joints and center bearing as previously mentioned. Also look for a possible balance weight having come loose from the shaft. They look like washers welded to the shaft, a spot where there is a weld, but no washer left would indicated your shaft is out of balance.
I was going to post my thread but ill start here. I also have a problem w/ my 4 wheel drive on my 1985 f-350. My problem is when i put it into 4wd it is making noises in the front. Almost like something metal is loose. seems to be turning the tires but making noises in 4wd, Any clues?
My 84 F250 HD 4x4 did the same thing yours is doing 1985F350 i would be in 4wd and all of a sudden the front end would make a loud pop noise like a hub not going in all the way i took the hubs all apart they are after market waren locking hubs cleaned and gresed them still did the same thing later that day i decided to go mess around with it in the mud. I got on it pretty hard to not get stuck when all of a sudden it started poping like crazy and then finally made a loud grinding sound and then nothing and i lost my 4WD anyway come to find out that my front axle spider gears were stripping out and one of them finally stripped all the teeth off and the other one about half the teeth off. I ended up getting a good used ring/spider gear and housing and put it all back together and was as good as new better then when i had first bought it since it had been doing that with the 4wd since i had first got it about a month or so ago its my wheelin/work truck
