Finally got my pyrometer installed, ran out to the test hill and she ran up over 1200 degrees fairly easy. I was pretty surprised, I thought the 65 hp setting was supposed to be pretty conservative.
I'm at 6200' elevation, wonder if that makes a difference?
Pre turbo installation sure lets you see the temp changes quick!

Probably why Diablo suggests gauges to monitor temps.. Allitude is a large contributor to EGT, as is grade, and load.. 1200 is still safe, and a short spike isn't going to squirt the piston out the pipe, but if your staying that high, a larger exhaust/intake upgrade would help to bring the numbers down.. What was the outside temp. when you did your test? I'm at a few hundred feet above sea level, and mine never saw much over 1100 on a full tilt, pulling a slow grade..
Predator sure is fun though...
Pre turbo is the only way I'd go... I wanna know right away!!!
Ambient temperature was in the high 40's low 50's.
I decided to get the gauge a couple of weeks ago when I had a 12,000 pound load on and my Predator crapped out on me. It was after hours at Diablo so I couldn't get the 65 hp tune out. I was stuck pulling a heavy load very, very slowly. I decided that night I had to have a gauge. Probably won't go any further, but if I do it will be a big downtube.
I think the gauge is going to make pulling the snowmobiles more interesting. I expect to use the 65hp setting all day with them.
DiabloSport 65 HP (Economy Performance Tune) is designed to add power and torque, but with fuel economy in mind. Fuel mileage is always subject to driving style and may vary from vehicle to vehicle. towing can be done with this tune with weight limitation of 8,000 lbs. Inclines must also be factored in.
If I read you right, you were towing 12,000 pounds, at 6500' elevation and climbing?
I would not be worried the least about 1200 degrees, even sustained. Generally, anything under about 1350 for 2-3 mins and under 1300 sustained is just plenty safe...despite what some people say.
SBV45 - Yes, you read correct. You can see the bind I was put in. When the Predator wouldn't download my factory tune, I was screwed! The only other choice was to drop the trailer where I was and come back the next day after I got ahold of Diablo.
Max 4x4 - That's right. Stock and the dreaded Predator error "license invalid". Be aware and change the tune before you load up! I think I had a voltage problem 'cause I had the trailer plug hooked up when I was changing the tune.
Hayapower - I'm up in Northwest Colorado. A tip 'o the hat to you for some of your posts on gauge installation, they helped me out quite a bit. I went with the Autometer pod and gauge. It sits right in the middle of the tach from my seating position on my 04.
The boat anchor stock exhaust is VERY restrictive....
I would SERIOUSLY consider at least getting a good 4" flow thru muffler, bet your egt's drop a BUNCH !
I have pulled up and down mountains all of the Rockies and kept the EGT at 1250 degrees for long periods of time...no problem......the longest I have run at 1250 never below that at times above is 2 hours and 25 minutes..
