Any body got any good ideas on how to lure a possum out of my attic. I had a tree branch break off and clip the edge of the roof and pull the fascia board away and I need to get it out before I nail the board back up. I know it's a possum cause I've seen it and my daughter hears it moving around in the attic over her room. I can't get back to that part of the attic because it's too small an area to get into. I don't know if it has young up there with it and I don't want it and it's young,if any, to die up there.
Put a baited trap up in that tree and hopefully the possum will come out at night and fall for the trap. I'm not sure, but I heard moth ***** will drive out most critters. Throw some moth ***** in the attic.
I'll try the moth ***** first. I've been told that moth ***** and flakes scattered around keep snakes and other critters away so maybe that might work. If not, I'll ask down at the pet shop about a trap.
Thank you.
Hope it works. That possum needs to find a new home! I used to live in apt. complex in San Marcos, Tx that was had possums all over the place, I had a huge one stick it's head in my apt. (door was open) while I was right there on the couch.
Watch out, a friend of mine got a possum in his attic and it chewed through the ceiling sheetrock to get into the house.
Made a nasty mess when it fell through into the laundry room...
I don't think it's gonna want to come in the house. I got five cats and a big black Labrador that don't like critters.
She barely puts up with the cats. I know possums can be pretty nasty and tear you up with them big sharp teeth if you corner them. As far as the police go, forget it, I'm kinda out in the country. Maybe if I were in more of a urban area they might help with a trap.
I'm going to see if the pet shop knows where I can rent a trap or borrow one to get this possum out. Good idea with the cat food, got plenty of that.
Ugly little critters. We've just started seeing them up here in MN and WI within the last few years. Friend of mine had one move into his garage and start sleeping in the area they had set up for their outside cats. Drank the water, ate the catfood and crapped in the garage ... I thought pig-doo smelled bad, possom is worse!!!
If you do catch him you may want to put it in a sack for weekend evening entertainment. I've never figured out the "fun factor" involved but the C&W song "Louisiana Saturday Night" speaks very highly of it ...
Sounds like the live-trap catfood combo should work for you. Just set it up in the attic through the access door. Good Luck with it!!
Let us know if the "sack thing" is worth the trouble ...
Do a google search on possums, and you will be surprised at how beneficul they are. Ugly little critters though. I agree with the live trap and cat food, should get them out. We live in the country, so they are around, but we ususally take the stance dont harm our livestock, we wont harm you.

You may want to try the search for "opossum" since possum is mainly a southern short for the word and most of the links you would get as colorfull as they might be, probably wouldn't be much help.
Possums (being from OK I can use that with confidence...) are tough to trap with anything less than a full conceilment trap. I've had them drag rat traps off before, and sticky traps usually just come up full of hair with no critter. If you can get a larger trap into the attic then that would be your best bet.
They would get under the crawl space of our old house all the time and make a terrible mess of my duct insulation. I set up a small trap (like the bear traps but smaller) in the opening where they were getting in one night and caught me a critter... but it wasn't a possum. I woke up about 4 a.m. to a horrible smell, I had snagged a skunk on his rear leg and boy was he upset. I got it out and killed it but man did our house stink for a few weeks... sure did run the possums out from under there though.
-BTW- I don't recomend you using a mad skunk to remedy your attic critter problems or any other problems you have...
Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions.
I threw a bunch of moth ***** up there to see if that will work and I'm waiting for some people to get back to me about the traps. I don't want to kill this little guy,or girl, as I feel that they were here first and we invaded their turf. I just want it to find another home.
looks like I'm kinda late on this subject, but I just trapped a possum here few weeks ago (Plano, NE of Dallas) I had a hard boiled egg without the shell and like a few slices of apple in the trap, which one attracted him I dunno. the animal control here will loan you a trap here for a week at no cost, and take the animal and let it go somewhere else too. and it's all free, and when I picked up a trap they gave me a paper with a list of baits for diff. animals. actually I was trying to trap an armadillo, and got a coon and a possum
good luck
Good advice woogs, I'll give animal control a call tomorrow and see if they do that here. I'm between Conroe and Magnolia out in the county so it will be county animal control. Thanks.
