Question Ad-aware doesn't work.. now what?

Well, I tried to use Ad-Aware again to remove my spyware, and it still doesn't like my computer. Last time I tried it, it would freeze about 10 seconds into the scan, and this time it will do the full scan, but will freeze when I try to delete the spyware items. I have SpyBlaster, but I think that it's just a preventative, I need something that will remove the existing spyware. Any suggestions for a spyware remover other than Ad-aware? Hopefully a free one.. I'm in college..

This is what I do for a living these days. Remove this garbage.

Do you know what you have?

Good read.
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

Downloads of programs.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Use SpyBot and Ad Aware.
I have found the CWShredder with the update catches a few items that these miss as well. Also found that http://housecall.trendmicro.com/hous...start_corp.asp
The Trend Virus scan finds things the others leave as well.

Good luck.

I can't remember where i got it from but cwshedder works on my computer. the about blank crap comes back every now and again but the spyware stuff doesn't let it take over. so when the spyware warnings come up about an attempt to change my home page and all the other stuff i just run the cwshredder and it wipes it out for a while till it comes back. you can just go to google and type in cwshredder and down load it free! it works for me!

Sheesh - want to stop getting NEW adware/spyware ? Stop using Internet Explorer and Outlook!

I am flabbergasted how much crap my sister's brand-new 2-month old machine had on it. She uses AOL's browser (Internet Explorer!) and constantly gets new stuff - now she's running two different spyware watchers and an anti-virus problem - her new 2.8GHz PC now seems to be running at 1Ghz...

I use Netscape - on Linux and Windows - never had any spyware and I've been to some strange places Granted, it's a little slower than IE because it can't take advantage of all the back-door "unsupported" entry-points... which probably leads to these lovely security holes.

Did anyone catch about 6 months ago, the (whatever it's name is) Federal Cyber Crime dept recommended AGAINST running Internet Explorer? Yeah, it was only until MS came out with the latest and greatest band-aid, but still, that marked the FIRST TIME the feds ever officially recommended against running IE because of security.

Like everyone says - "I clean them, they go away for a while, then come back again" - you're not fixing the problem, just band-aid'ing it. Tossing IE and Outlook is the only long-term answer to the problem.

We are starting to switch my clients to Firefox.
It has some really cool features you must get used to at first but it doesn't have the MS problems.

While my work is in large UNIX/Oracle systems, I do know my clients (two Fortune 500's among others) would never move away from IE - too much of their internal stuff only works with IE ... what a way to build a monopoly

You are absolutely correct. I have some that I cannot move because of ActiveX controls.

But remember there is no one program to clean up all this. You must use these together.
Install Spybot. Update.
Install Ad Aware. Update.

Run each one back to back.

If either one asks you to run after reboot say yes. There was something running it could not clean.

And they are like anti-virus software - the latest thing will get you before the update is out, so you will get it anyway, even if only for a little while.

Close the security hole - turn off the computer

(And I bet you thought I was going to bash IE/Outlook again, didn't you?)

Anyone know how to get rid of search200? All the spyware/adware I've downloaded won't pick it up. I removed kazaa and everything I could to get rid of it but the damn thing won't go away.

I used Spy nuker first, then got spybot search and destroy, and added Mozilla firefox, and I hardly need the adware programs, but a few still get through, but nothing like I had before going to firefox. It crashes when I close a window going back to the email window somewhat regular, but I can live with it when it stops all the garbage that it has been.

If I remember CWShredder will do it. CWS is Cool Web Search.
And remember to update. Always make sure it's the latest and greatest.

Never had any troubles from MajorGeeks. I only post in the forums there and download som programs. Although CNet is also good for downloads. Sometimes MG is sloooooooow.
http://www.download.com/2001-20_4-0.html?tag=cnetfd.sb

And stick with the ones Listed Spybot and Adaware.

I had a client buy Nuker and it was as bad as the spyware they were trying to remove. They claim that they never have done that but admit the current version is different and guaranteed to be junk free. Hmmmm suspicious.
