I've got an '03 FX4, and I love the truck. I'd buy it again today if I was in that position. The new Chevy and Dodge mid-size trucks just don't impress me. I liked the Toyota Tacoma, but the Ford dealer not only gave me a MUCH better deal, but treated me better than the Toyota dealer.
It's big enough to haul what I need, but small enough that I can still park it at work. The 4.0 has enough power to keep me satisfied, but I can still afford to put gas in it.
I haven't really taken it off-road, but I bought it for winter. I live on a nasty hill, and Wisconsin gets a lot of snow. Winter driving is kind of anti-climactic, 'cause the Ranger just goes. But that's what I bought it for.
I haven't had a single problem with it. That's a nice change of pace, because the S-10 Blazer I had before gave me nightmares wondering what part would die next.
Heck, everyone wants something a little different in a truck. And I try never to tell anyone what truck they ought to buy, because they may have different needs. For me, though, the FX4 has been perfect. It's not the fanciest or most expensive vehicle I've ever owned, but it's the one I'm happiest with.
I was told that the Ranger was a little cramped being as small as it is even with the ex cab, but today when I drove the 03' today, it was quite cozy, even with me being 6'3". It wasn't cramped in any situation and all the controlls were right at my fingertips.
I am 6'2 and have a 98 regular cab. I think it fits just right. It is noticably bigger inside than my old 98 Dodge dakota reg. cab, even though the dakota is a midsize and the ranger is a compact. I love the truck, It's good on and off road, and at 87,000 miles the only thing i've had to replace was the alternator. Oh, and the hubs, but that won't be a problem with the 03, as they changed the hubs to a constant lock system in 00. Oh, only bad thing is the 3.0 engine is pretty underpowered. Go with the 4.0 if you can. It's a lot more powerful with minimal extra fuel consumption.
I've never really understood where people come off with the "cramped" thing either.
I'm 6'1 and 210 lbs, owned a 93 reg cab, an 01 ext cab and now an 04 ext cab, and have never felt cramped in any of them. I have a friend that is about 300+., and he comlpiments it on the room it has for a small truck. Some of the guys that only buy fullsizes to haul their egos around must try to use "cramped" for some kind of lame excuse, i dunno.
I dont have either of the FX4 packages, but I do have an 04 4X4 supercab. It has plenty of room, and performs well offroad. The 4.0L V-6 has plenty of both grunt and HP, you will be surprised with this engine and just how much guts it has. And it still gets around 20 MPG.
i've wondered about those hubs but didn't know they'd been changed, that's great to hear though.
What all does the FX4 package cosist of?? I know its underbody skids, suspension, and tires(are the BF Goodrich ATs what come factory). but is there anything else??
