My question today is what is the main difference between fx4 off road, fx4 level II, and 4x4 packages. The only thing i really know for sure is that the fx4 has LS diff and sits up a tad bit higher. Also are there any advantages of having a LS diff in say snow or ice or should a regular diff be better off? Thanks!
when I bought my F350 some years back the FX version came with a factory skid pan over the front diff, and the fuel tanks. I would suppose that is still true as the 4x4 lariat was just that a 4x4 street truck (which basically the FX is also). Reason they build so many'4x4' that will never see dirt is that its what the people want to buy, not because of need. As to LS might be some advantage over a open diff but if really worried get with some 4x guys and ask about lockers for the thing vs LS. The LS will cause the not slip wheel to engage if the drive wheel is not.
I'm not sure the differences between level I and II 2003 and up. 2002 FX4 was an XLT with all upgrade options, skid plates, bilstein shocks, and Torsen rear w/4.10 gears. 2002 FX4 had the 4-door config which I think was not available in 2002 XLT but not 100% sure on that.

Im probably going to be seeing quite a bit of off road and snow so I think th LS would be a good idea

What is a good year range for fx4 rangers? I was thinking maybe 04-08? Not sure though
I found that I have an original factory brochure for the 2004 Ranger. I scanned the three pages that give all the options available. Maybe this will help you.

It helped out quite a bit actually. Ive narrowed my search to at least an fx4 but I would go level 2 if I can ever find one for a decent price and mileage.

I think all the years were good. Only one I would want to be aware of is the 2002. The Torsen in the 2002 was known to grenade around 50-60k miles. Mine did and was replaced/rebuilt by Ford for the cost of 3 qts gear lube. I know 3 other owners with 2002 with similar experience. That rebuild lasted until about 190k miles, replaced it with a friction disc LS.
One other thing on the 2002, which may or may not apply to other year FX4's: rear diff is a 31-spline. That makes it an odd duck finding replacement axles if you ever need them, no aftermarket and no longer available from Ford. Also with the larger bearing journal you need the larger rear axle bearing and seals, not the bearings and seals listed in most parts catalogs for all other Rangers. Bearings and seals for similar year Explorer 8.8 should be correct though since they also had 31-spline.
