new intake manifold or headers?

I would like to know if the stock intake is any good on a 74 460? I want to know which would improve the HP more. A new intake or headers? I can't afford both right now.

What are you trying to achieve, low rpm torque or high rpm horsepower? The stock manifold is a dual plenum design which is optimized to give torque in the low rpm range. It does this by splitting the barrels of your carb up between the 8 cylinders, giving 4 cylinders to each primary barrel in an alternating manner, first one, then the other. this keeps the air/fuel velocity high at low rpm's which improves drivability and responsiveness. Most of your "high performance" intake manifolds are of the single plenum design, although there are exceptions. These manifolds have one large plenum that the carb "dumps" into. The top end breathing is much improved, but they kill your low end torque to a degree.

Headers on the other hand help to scavenge the exhaust out of the cylinder and provide an increase in performance on the low and high rpm scales, as well as increase mpg and everything else good!
