1.what would be a good cam to put in this for pulling my TT. I WOULD LOOK TO SCOTT MAIN AT WWW.CAMRESEARCHCORP.COM FOR THE CAM/LIFTER/SPRINGS. HE IS A MASTER OF 429/460 FORDS WHEN IT COMES TO HEADS AND CAMS.
2. should I go with the Land L headers. L&L AND ALSO STAHL. BOTH VERY GOOD, STAHL HAS A KIT YOU CAN WELD UP YOURSELF.
3. what timming chain and gears. 1970 CAM SET, I LIKE CLOYS FROM WWW.SUMMITRACING.COM
4. what intake manafold. ITS HARD TO BEAT A STEALTH. I'VE SEEN GUYS TRY DIFFERENT INTAKES ON DYNOS AND THE STEALTH IS THE BEST TOURQUE/HP COMPROMISE.
5. new oil pump? YES BUT NOT HIGH PRESSURE. GET A GOOD PERFORMACE STOCK PRESSURE PUMP.
6. stock heads no work to them? THERE IS ALWAYS GREAT GAINS TO BE SEEN BY PORTING HEADS. HOME PORTING TO WORK THE EX PORT IS WELL WORTH THE TIME AND EFFORT. YOU CAN LEARN ABOUT 429/460 HEAD PORTING AT http://reincarnation-automotive.com/
I currently have a 1995 f250 4x4 460 auto trans( not sure what style, it is not OD that i can tell) and get crap for gas milage. I run 285/85/16, axle code 39(3:55 i think) and a correct speedo reading. I have only had it for a week now, and I know the truck sat for some time on the lot and am hoping it will only get better in time.
For timing set here is a good choice from CRANE:
CRN-35993-1 Timing Set, Roller, 3 Pc. Metal, Multi Keyway, BB Ford 370-429-460 3-9 $84.39
Why the old style timing set you ask? Ford changed the timing set for smog engines and retarded the cam 8 degrees and that cost the buyer about 40 hp. You change to a old stlye no retard timing set and you put the 40 hp back where it belongs, under your right foot!
Oil pump:
MEL-M84 Ford: 429/460, standard volume, steel, cast, OEM replacement oil pump Today $29.95
Why did I suggest not getting a high volum like this one:
MEL-M84DHV Ford: 1975-97 370/429/460 trucks, high volume oil pump
Because there are many BBF 429/460 engines that have internal oil leaks around the lifters that with a high volum/high pressure type pump you end up making the leak around the lifters and down into the engine more severe.
A stock pump will not dump so much oil around the lifters, and it will help keep you from shearing the distributor gear pin.
If you check the lifter bores for size and out of round with an inside mic and find they are within .004 of factory specs you use a stock pump and you will be just fine. If things are worn beyond that, you can bad-aid the low oil pressure that is caused by this with a high vol pump, but the negative side is that you cause a rain storm in the crank case and create fantastic windage. The windage will absorb power as your crank beats thru this oil, and it will introduce air into oil and have a negative effect on the oils ability to cool the bearings. This is bad. I would hope that your lifter bores are good, and you can use a stock pump. With the low miles you say is on the block I think you should be good.
Work the EX ports on your head, the intake is fine as is aside from a port match. Us ethe website I linked you to above, it will be the best $25.00 you ever spent. Scott J's website is a BBF resource that is topped by none I have ever seen. Good luck man!
