A good buddy of mine just finished stuffing a '72 429 into an 88 t-bird with a 4 speed.
the engine is an all stock short block, the bearings were within ford specks so he didn't touch them. the heads are '70 dove heads, with a compression ratio of 11.5 to 1 he says. he also bought a wieind dual quad set up with 600 cfm holly's.
so my question is, today we took her out for the first ride and it will hit 6 grand with hardly any problem, i have heard that the stock rods are pretty good at bending and breaking at hi rpm's. I was wondering what you all thought about it. should we be worried about the rods???
Ive got a 71 429 scj in my GT, all stock lower end with a motorsport c cam, victor 460 intake, 1.7 ford racing roller rockers, and a 850 mighty demon, and I make power to 7200 and she aint even wound tight yet!
yea i forgot to mention he had a pretty good cam too.
well 7200 is way the H*ll up there never even hit that with a small chevy. but it is nice to know what other people are doin with there's. this thing is purely a mean looking street machine and i am sure it will get rodded hard so nice to have an idea. thanks
we will be at Car Craft Summer nationals this summer so maybe there.
what do you think about a 460 he built a pretty good one for his dads trucksame thing stock bottom end but he set the rev limiter at 4200. i think that one could go more, my 454 will hit 5 no problem.
I dont know a ton about 460s, but I wouldnt see youd need to spin it high. Specially since Im sure it makes more torque down low than the 429
YES it does. I took my truck to a diesel day on a dyno and got him to bring the 460. the thing had a torque curve like a Turbo diesel, right a 1200 it flattened out and only lost about 10 f/lbs all the way to 4000. didnt make huge horsepower but had a very impresive torque curve.
