OK I went out to get some new lower intake gaskets, but of course none were in stock, but DAMN they are expensinve, I don't understand, its not like its an uncommon motor, although not as common as a 302 or something but still c'mon. I bought a used Edelbrock aluminum lower intake CHEAPER then the cost of the gaskets, what gives? After taxes it comes to about $48US for the lower gaskets alone. This was converted from Canadian prices which equalled about $64 CDN (our taxes suck)
Is this about the right price or is the auto parts store trying to HOSE their customers?
When I installed a new intake it seems to me I payed $32 for a set of stock replacement gaskets. Gaskets are out of sight, I'm told by my parts house take oil prices are the reason. In fact I have hear this from different parts houses. Just remember Bush is looking out for us. If you were rich $48 would be nothing.
Just so you know, "Lower Intake" refers to an EFI system that uses an upper and a lower half to the intake manifold (a la 5.0L Ford, for example).
Carbureted engines do not have a "Lower Intake", as they are a single piece assembly, nor do they have a "Lower Intake Gasket", they just have an intake gasket.
OK now I am getting confused. Now I go to FORD and they say the intake gasket is UNSERVICEABLE? The one dealership also lists it as being $20 CDN cheaper then the other dealership? What gives? Then the guy finds the gaskets in the FORD MOTORSPORTS catalog and they list 2 different thickness gaskets. One is 0.060 and the other is 0.125 thick. Then they say something about a PAN under the intake.
Some engines have a metal intake gasket, such as the 351C, 351M, 400 and the 385-series engines.
This metal gasket is in a "pan" shape; i.e.: it covers the lifter valley, and it was designed to help keep hot oil from splashing onto the underside of the intake manifold.
I would guess that it really depends on the heads you have as to whether this would be the correct gasket or not, because there are SOME heads that have enormous intake ports (I believe the 429 SCJ).
I have not seen the intake gasket of which you spoke that is listed in the FRPP catalog, but this would seem to make sense regarding this being the gasket that is listed there (one designed for the SCJ heads), as it would have been designed for the larger ports and with the pan, it would keep hot oil from splashing onto the (most likely) aluminum intake manifold (thus helping keep the intake air as cool as possible before entering the port).
OK I finally ordered a set that said it was for all 460 models, it said for M9424C460 intakes and for M6049C460 heads and also M6049D460 heads, with a thickness of 0.060 on the gasket, this is what I got today, the gasket holes are nothing like the manifold bolt hole alignment and the ports are SQUARE!!!!!! What gives, did I get the wrong gasket? The FORD part number is M-9439-E460 this time with an E
After checking the site again I looked under FelPro gaskets this time and it lists 2 gaskets as well, one the 0.060 and then the 0.120 gaskets, both say for M6049A460 heads, this time the A instead of C or D what does that mean? here is the description: Felpro part number 12213
PORT SIZE: 1.82" X 2.45", THICKNESS: .060" (1/16"), M6049 A460 CYLINDER HEAD, STANDARD W/COATING
HELP I need to replace this intake but not sure which gaskets to get, does anyone have the proper part number for me? Thanks.
