Could be a cracked flywheel. I had a 302 in a '77 Mustang in high school. We dyno'd it in shop showing 295hp with about as much torque. I drove it for several months and it developed this god awful screech. Checked everything and couldnt find the source until I pulled the motor to "disect" it. The flywheel had begun to crack around the bolts. Cause? My guess was a combo of the bellhousing bolts coming loose and the fact that it had solid motor/tranny mount. Just food for thougth.

Guess it's not the belts

The cam-retainer sounds like a good idea, but it could be the flywheel hitting the engine plate?

One other thing - did you ever hear a starter not disengage right away? Is it THAT type of screech?

how could i tell if the starter won't disengage it is also mounted to a auto so i don't know if the flexplate would crack but the starter is brand new

Hmm...

With the motor cold, grab the free end of the starter and give it a shake to see if there's ANY play. A few thermal cycles, some vibration...stranger things have happened.

I've seen new starters with different length snouts when compared with the old one. I've seen old starters with notches cut in the snout by the ring gear. These same starters had enough slop in the mounting holes to rotate their "clock" position just enough to cause interference.

While you are down there, remove the inspection cover from the front of the bell housing. Look for metal shavings, excessive fluid leakage. Verify that the bell housing is tight against the block.

FWIW, your tranny fluid being "a little low" shouldn't cause problems. Even with the best maintenance, parts wear out.

Pull the tranny inspection plate. That's an easy 4 bolt sanity check. If you see parts or shavings, you know where to start looking.

Also, if this is a new rebuild, 20w50 oil is too thick. I would run thinner oil until it was broke in.
