I have a 77 F150 Ranger with a 460. Truck is lifted 6" suspension and 3" Body. The front end is a Dana 44 5 lug. When I get the truck over 30 mph the front passanger side bounces so hard it feels like the front end is comming off the ground. It is not the brakes sticking. Any ideas would be a great help.
How long have you had these tires and how long has it been bouncing like this? My first guess would be a major imbalance in the tire or an out of round tire. Also check the obvious: shocks. Could be that you have one bad shock on that corner which can't dampen the bounce from the road. Do you have any vibration or shimmy in your steering wheel when this happens?
Had these tires for about 3 years. I broke the extention housing on the C6 and to find the housing to match the 205 it took about 8 months. So tires did go flat. Front passanger was the only tire that broke the bead. I am thinking that the tire is out of round but I hve no vibration at any of the lower speeds. Is there anyother way to check the tire other then by tryinig to balance it?
If you reseated the bead without pulling the tire off the rim to inspect it, you could have anything inside the tire from water to dead varmints throwing the ballance off at faster speeds. Out of round or broken belts may be noticable by spinning it by hand while jacked up and looking at the run out. I don't know, may be difficult to get one that large to spin by hand though!
If the bead broke I'd say there's a good chance you got some junk inside it or it is just out of balance. Take it into a good tire shop and have them check it. If they can't work with a tire that size (GH 40's are really 38" or so . . . not too tough to work with) take it to a truck shop and they'll balance it for you. The tire shouldn't be out of round just from going flat.
I know this is going to make me look like a goof but I think you said the magic word. Water, we did have 3 hurricanes this year and have had a bunch of that stuff dumped on us this year. i did not even thing about it until I read that. I will check it this afternoon and let you know in the morning. Anything else you can think of I could check, ie tie rods, knuckles, and the sort?
Tie rod ends, etc should cause more of a vibration in the steering and not so much a "bouncing". I'd bet money you've got some junk in that tire, probably sloppy mud or sand. Let us know what you find out.
Only problem with taking the tire to a shop is that there is only one shop that can (or will should I say) work on them in my area and its an hour away from home.
ok here we go, ok the tire off last night broke the bead and found 2 gallons of water inside. dried it out and now the truck gets really squirrelly around 50 but no bounce. I guess next is going to be Tie rods, bearings and bushings. Thanks
Get the tires balanced and see if that helps. If you can't get that done close to home, do you have another set of rims and tires to put on and try. I've had bad luck with old tires that sat for a long time, lost air, etc.
no other tires or rims, I dont want to spend too much time / money on this because I am swapping the front to a Dana 44 8 lug and a Dana 60 in in the rear in about 2 months. As of right now I am just trying to get it somewhat road worthy.
