How much do you want to spend and do you have any visions for the engine in the future? Gas mileage will go down with any changes as you tend to have more fun with the truck . If you want to step up to a 4brl, do you want new or can you go used. Lots of questions to answer before making a choice.
The whole "2bbl gets better milage than a 4bbl" urban myth is just that: a myth. Others might disagree with me here, but I feel that a 4bbl gives you better milage than a 2bbl. The reason is that a 2bbl has to compensate for more versitile driving conditions, such as idling, crusing, and passing, so it is jetted richer to deal with the wide varity of situations it sees. In a 4bbl, the primaries are used most of the time, and are jetted (in most stock applications) for economy while the secondaries are only used when the footfeed is pressed to the floor. So if you can keep your foot out of the carborator, I'd go with a modest 4bbl, such as an Edelbrock 500-600 cfm with a 4bbl intake. Not knowing Fords all that well I'm not sure which stock intakes will fit the 352--for some reason I think that either the 360 or the 390 is the same block with a different bore/stroke. Any more input on that?
i run a edelbrock 600 with their performer intake on my 390. you can forget good gas mileage . i get about 8 in town and 12 on the road but it made it come alive. the 360,352 will also fit.
I run 390, a Holley SA 670 on a Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, with a warm cam and headers. Best mileage with a 3.54 rear gear is 16 mpg highway. Guesstimating 12 mpg city. For the fun I get out of the 4 bbl/header setup, the mileage is great. My 04 Mustang GT only gets 16/20 city/Hwy.
I had the same problem with my truck. I kept the stock intake and bought a holley 500 cfm 2 barrel. Those intakes are not cheap! This has worked on my truck for almost 3 years and no problems whatsoever. 352 rv cam bored .30 over. made a huge difference in the way the truck performs. The mileage is nothing to write home about, but if I go easy on the loud pedal it is decent.
