I have a 1999 Ranger with the 2.0 4cyl engine mated to a 5spd manual transmission. A friend of mine bought the sister truck (Mazda) but bought his with an automatic. What is interesting is that his intrument panel includes the tach and mine does not. My '99 Explorer which is an automatic also includes the tach.
I was wondering two things..
Why would they not put a tach on a manual transmission truck?
Is it possible to buy an instrument panel with a tach included without having to install an external tach?

The tachometer is an option for the vehicle offered by the maunfacturer. My 92 ranger with a stick was the same way, no tach. with this type of setup your manual instructs you to shift at what speeds, instead of rpms.
Yeah you could, but then you might be opening a can of worms that might lead to some big trouble, like odometer fraud (the display is one big unit). Personally I'd go with an external one that could be mounted on your drivers side window frame, that way it wouldn't look tacky.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Oct-02 AT 08:13 AM (EST)]98-01 Rangers, the tach is only offered in the 4x4's, sport models, and Trailhead. It is not a feature you can ask for unless you get the above models. And yes it is very easy to buy a dash from a model that has a tach. It is easy to install.
But isn't it possible to have the odometer on the new dashboard reset to match the actual mileage on the truck. Can't a dealership reset this with their computer?
