Compressor Oil

When I drained the oil out of my Husky Cast Iron Compressor pump, I replaced it with Mobil 1, which I use to lube a lot of stuff, and have used it in our vehicles for years...but is it OK for compressor oil??
I ask because my compressor starter lightly knocking yesterday...I've been running it hard, using my air sanders on some extensive bodywork(OK, Bondowork). I've had the Mobil 1 in there about 1 hour of run time.

I am not sure about using Mobil one, it is a high detergent oil made for engines and the weight may be off. I doubt you hurt it after an hour but I would dump it and put synthetic comp oil in. Most auto parts stores have it and I even saw it listed on the adds on this page. It is designed specifically for comps, to cling to the parts without adding resistance.

Bike,
I've been running Mobil 1 (10-30W) in my compressor for 4 to 5 years now. I don't use it often but when I do, I run it for hours at a time. I sandblast and die grind, and sand on old rusty fords. My compressor runs strong, no problems.
Consider it,

Big Negatory on the Mobil 1 in your compressor!!! You need to run non-detergent 30 weight in the winter and a 30 or lighter synthetic in the summer. The detergent action of the oil causes it to foam much like over filling your tranny and thus it loses its viscosity and can't coat the moving parts like it needs to. You might get away with it for awhile, but I guarantee it will shorten the life of you pump. Regular compressor oil will run you about 7-8 bucks a quart, but that is usually enough to do 2 changes. Good luck!

Compressor Oil?????

I have spent a lifetime working and building air compressors and I would advise you use hydraulic oil ISO viscosity grade 32. Thats about 20wt. If your oil supplier knows anything about his oil tell him the oil should have only Rust, Faom and oxidation inhibitors in it. Anything else will only foul the valves up.

If you cannot find it then look for 20wt Non Detergent motor oil. Motor oil is OK but like I said it has chemicals in it that hurt the valves.

Synthetics are allright but are pricey and do not provide the returns on your investment.

Change your oil every 500 Hrs. in your reciprocating comprerssor or about once a year for a homeowner.

Good Luck

Fix n air, Good info. Most compressor manuals don't say what weight of oil, only insist on using thier brand wich isn't allways availible in the area.

My cheap import compressor with the coleman nametag, said the same thing, and mobil 1 if not available. didn't mention a weight though.

Never thought of hyd fluid myself.

I'll watch the thread a little longer before I switch fir winter in my unheated garage

I have a Craftsman black compressor that looks pretty similar to the stand up oil-less ones they sell, but it's an oiler. The owners manual contradicted itself, in one place saying use only 30wt oil (no multi-vis automotive oil) and in another place saying to only fill with 10w-30 Mobil 1. I was hanging out at the shop one night, bored, and decided to dump the factory fill and put in some Amsoil 10w-30. Big mistake Immediately everything I used smelled like Amsoil. It was blowing by something terrible. I looked at the water separator and it had a slurry of oil and water in it in no time. I quickly dumped it and put compressor oil back in it.

I do remember looking at the Huskys and them calling for Mobil 1 though.
