Ford had a spec for stick shift of around 3 BTDC; automatics fell in the 6-10 range. Guess they wanted the slushbox Fordo's to have a bit more power!
Be careful of the timig marks. The damper is 2 pieces seperated by rubber and they have a habit of seperating over the years which gives erratic timing readings. Set the points/dwell by the book (.015" & 26-28 deg) and you can usually time by ear if need be.
Thanks for everyones posts, I think what I'm looking for is the position of the timing marks on the 292, some say that you allign the marks straight up and down and others say they point to the oil filter side of the engine. The problem that I have is my truck is all original and the doc I have is for a 1955, but the block I'm rebuilding is a 1959, so I don't have much doc on the 1959.
Got the same combo, '55 truck, but '59 motor (312).
I will wait for a real guru to answer you, but my experience is that the engine runs best with timing mark on the pulley right on the indicator, about straight up.
Are you referring to the alignment marks on the gears of the timing set? If so...
Looking at the front of the engine, with the driver's side to your right: the marks of both gears should be on the right (driver's) side, more or less horizontal, with 12 "pins" of the chain in between them. In other words, from top to bottom: cam gear mark, 12 pins, crank gear mark. Hope this helps, Mike
