Identifying this engine!!

I need an engine guru here to help me id this engine. A buddy of mine just bought a 1970 F100 and was told it had a 302 in it. He started looking and thought maybe it was a 351W. I told him to give me his engine casting code and I would look around to see, but it got a little confusing. The casting number is D1AE-6015-DA 9 1816. Could it possibly be a 400?

Does this nail it or should we look for other tell-tale signs?

Thanks!

Nova Rod

a casting number might mean something to someone but it doesnt mean anything to me, the best way i would be able to i.d. a motor would be pull the head, measure the bore and stroke and compare the figures gotten to a motors/chiltons book. im sure theres somewhere the casting #s could be checked but i havent a clue where.

I doubt if its a 400, they Ford didn't make them until the mid 70's. One could have been installed though. A 400 might have larger heads than a 302 or 351. Also, a 400 will have 8 valve cover bolts, where as the 302 or 351w only have 4 I think.To tell the difference between a 302 & 351, check the firing order. 351 doesn't have the common Ford firing.
302:1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8(pre 1986)
351w: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.
400m: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.

Hope that helps,
Trevor

how many valve cover bolts are there? that is how i tell what engine family it is from
if it has 6 bolts it is a winsor engine(302 or 351) then you just measue the deck hieght
a 302 is just over 8 inches, the 351 is almost 10 inches.

if its a cleveland/modified engine it will have 8 valve cover bolts.

the FE family has 5 valve cover bolts

the 429/460 family has 7 valve cover bolts
that casting number dont tell me much

It could be a 360 or a 390 FE block also. If it is an untouched original there is a tag under the coil mounting bracket that has the engine size on it.

Thanks for the responses! I'll check for the tag and also the firing order. That will help us narrow it down some more. I also doubted whether or not the casting number would help any. I suggested pulling the heads and measuring the bore size. May come to that later on, but it looks like he just wants to tune it up and have some fun with it.

Thanks again!

Nova Rod (new to Fords and it shows!)

If it has a casting number on the left front of the block "352", it is an FE block. It could be a 360 or 390, they were optional engines for that year. They also had the 302 and 351W. The six cylinder options were the 240 and the 300 cu in.

a 351w has a noticeably higher deck then a 302, if you look at where the head meets the engine to where the water pump is, that wiill be a lot taller on the 351, if you look on google, i'm sure you could find some pictures. at least this way you won't have to take the heads off right away. the firing order isn't always a good method, cause it might be a 351w cam in a 302 or a 302 cam in a 351w; like my engine in my mustang , a 351w with a 302 cam, no one ever told me that

All the casting number mean is the Part ID.
D1 = 71
A = Designed for a full size Ford Car
E= Engine part

6015 = Engine Block
DA = Suffix of changes DA means it has had MANY design changes from the original 71 design.
If it was an A = that would mean it was the first design and would be used in a 71 Ford Car

This Engine you speak of has had many changes & probably relates to a 76 engine.

My experience tells me it is 302.

The key to date is the OTHER Cssting numbers ie: * 5L21 *

Get me those numbers the valve cover bolt count & Voila !

I'll let you know.
