I have a 74' F-250.... Tired of dealing with points so i wanna take parts off my 76' to get rid of them... Can anyone tell me what all i'm gonna have to change??
I appreciate any help i can get... Thanks
You will need to get an electronic distributor and change out the coil. You might possibly have to change the plug wire's from the eletronic depending on the size of the wire's you have. If you have 7mm wire's change over to 8mm.
Ok, i changed distributor, coil, and wires but i have two plugs coming off this coil heading to the firewall, one of them plugs in but the other has nothing to plug into... At this point i have no spark so i'm assuming this plug could be my problem..... Any idea??
Ok, this plug is coming off the distributor.... The plug that comes off the distributor plugs into it's mate then it runs bag along the intake to the firewall where it splits into two plugs... One is flat and the other is round... The round plug has no home.... Sorry if i'm confusing you... This is all new to me....
This one is round.... my coil is plugged in... Basically, the wires come out of my distributor, plug into the coil wires (half round plug) then the wires continue back along my valve cover (drivers side) then the wires split into two plugs... One is flat which there was a home for... And one is round, like the coil plug only it is round..... There is no place for this plug to go?? Would i maybe need to put a brain in this truck.... (Little silver box on drivers side inner fender well)??
Yes, you will have to install a dura spark ignition box (brain). Once you do that it will have 2 plugs on it, one goes to your dist. (3 wires) and the "other" plug (2 wires) on the box, that will need switched (with the key) 12V positive power hooked to the red wire for power to the box and 12V power during cranking hooked to the white wire, I believe this is used to retard spark timing during starting to avoid hard cranking in hot condition. I usually do not hook up the white wire at all, just the red one to a switched 12V power sorce. These boxes are different for some engines, they have a colored plastic piece to hold the wires where they enter the box. I am assuming that your engine is a V-8 and if that is so, you will need a dark blue one. If you go with a new one (best way to go) just tell them your trucks info at the auto part's store. -Ed
Just install a Pertronix ignition module.....use stock coil, and distributor....only two wires....kit even comes with a feeler guage to set the gap.....takes about 15 mins.
