Pros and Cons to '94 7.3 Turbo Diesel
I am looking at a '94 7.3 Turbo Diesel F-350 and was wondering what the pros and cons might be on such? Got fairly screwed by not doing enough research on my last purchase and I am trying not to make the same mistake twice. It isn't a powerstroke that I know of, believe it is just one of the pre-powerstrokes.

What do you think you get on average for your gas mileage? At the moment I currently own a '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee, All Wheel Drive, and average about 13/16 city/hwy.. It really bugs me, but I got a great deal and can sell it as of this moment and come out ahead in the deal, and have always loved diesels. Found a decent deal on a '94 F350 and figured I would look into it.

I just bought a 94 F250 4x4 supercab long bed with a IDI TD and 4.10 gears. I drove it back from FL yesterday and tested the mileage. Here is what I got...the truck was basically empty...one motorcycle in the bed and pulling a jetski on a trailer.
Cruise Controll set at 70mph (about 2250rpm) --> 13mpg
Cruise Controll set at 60mph (about 2000rpm) --> 16.5mpg
Cruise Controll set at 55mph (about 1800rpm) --> 21.3mpg
All of the above figures were obtained in very similar moderately hilly conditions on the same day and were tested for more than 100 miles. I never found the limit of its power....even on some of the steeper grades the cruise controll held it at whatever it was set for without downshifting or slowing at all. I suspect that the higher speed mileage figures could be improved with the ATS turbo outlet housing and downpipe (and mabey a gear vendors overdrive).

I perfer the ZF 5 for a tranny, but oh well.
These are fairly easy trucks to work with, however the power generating modifications take money. It certainly is not a powerstroke.

CC, extended cab, or reg cab?
Nothing beats sitting above the traffic on my daily commutes (200 kilometers / day). I fill both tanks every 4 days, however I just changed my injection pump and I expect to get better milage.
I have an F250 '91 stock 7.3 L with ZF 5 that I can get 800 kilometers on both tanks at highway speeds (110 km/hour).
Generally if I drive above 2100 RPM, on the highway, I find I am just wasting fuel....

I'll agree with everyone else here they are/can be good trucks.
Before you buy questions you could ask are:
1) Check the SCA additive in the coolent. Does the current owner know what it is, did he/she use it. (lookup cavitation and coolent additives here, you'll find a lot)
2) What work has been done to it. new IP, batteries, etc.
3) Ask about oil consumption / look for leaks older engines do use some oil, and i'd guess there are some leaks but make sure its not excessive.
4) There have been a number of posts on looking to purchase these rig's in the past. They would be worth a read.

i have an 89' with 4.10 gears and a 93' with 3.55 gears. the 4.10 gears run 2700 at 70, the 3.55 runs 2200 at 70 if it has 3.73's(rare) then it will run 2400 rpm at 70. i think someone just told him that the truck has 4.10's to sell the truck. it really has 3.55's so make sure if you want gas milege you get the one that runs 2200 rpms at 70 in overdrive.the turbo is really controvercial thing. i helped a guy take the turbo's off 4-94's and they all seemed to run better after the mod, they pulled better, i don't know about the fuel milege, but they did seem to run better. check the coolant, if it is pretty green, thats a good thing, if its nasty brown, thats a bad thing. make sure it starts all right, tell the guy you want to meet him at 7:00 in the morning and watch it start when the engine is cold. if he alredy has it good and warmed up for you, tell him to keep it. if it is automatic and the tranny works well, its a rare thing. stick with the standard if possible. the trannies are good trannies, but people abuse them too badly and they do funny things. also, if you floor the truck with no load on the engine, it should run smooth, not rough like i have seen some, this means the injection pump and injectors are iff-ey. hope this helps you

I understand....I wanted a crew cab also..but this one was a really good deal and I didnt actualy need the crew cab (its just me and my fiancee right now). I am hoping to put on the ATS turbo housing and down pipe this winter, but it depends on available funds (getting married in Januarary )
