What kind of MPG can you expect with a 2WD 6L automatic around town and on the highway.
I know this is the 6L board but how does these numbers compare to the 7.3L<O</O
<O
The other question is to go 6L or 7.3L and why?<O</O
<O
I am not trying to start anything with this question. It's asked for financial reasons since a couple of years and a few miles on a used vehicle make a big difference in price. I guess I just need some convincing to let go.<O</O
WELCOME to the site, please read the Guidelines… Check out the list of forums and make sure you read the headings and Read First: notices in each forum.
I recommend that you do a search on mpg or mileage and see what you get. There will be a lot of reading. I average 15 around town and 19-20 on highway unloaded. And I have a 4x4.
There are many variables that affect mpg. Tires, tire pressure, barometric pressure, wind, geography, driving habits, etc. So just because one gets a particular mileage, it doesn't mean you will get the same.
And it's like the old adage about buying an expensive car....
"if you gotta ask, don't get it!"
IMHO, these are NOT one of the vehicles to get if mpg is one of the first questions you ask...
I DID get 20.6 actual mpg 21.5 on overhead this weekend on trip back from memphis...
but that was @ a constant 70 mph ....
but, on edit, it IS the best travelling vehicle I've ever owned...
better than any car, any motorhome... its just the right size for what I need and handles well and has MORE than enough power and fuel economy if I don't act TOO YOUNG

I took a trip the length of Illinois this past weekend. I live west of Chicago and went down to almost the farthest tip if Illinois. It was about 880 miles round trip. I pulled a trailer and don't know what it weighs but it has all the SCUBA gear for 3 people in it along with 8 air cylinders and all our diving weights, fridge(loaded with food) and repair tools for dive equipment. I can't even guess on the weight. I had a Dodge with a 4.7 engine before and the mileage drop was about 6 miles per gallon pulling the trailer.
The new truck(signature) lost only 2 miles per gallon and that was pretty nice. I get 16.3 with mixed driving but the truck only has 1800 miles on it right now. I'm really amazed at how nice it pulled this trailer. I have a 16 foot flat, dual axle that I haul ATV's on along with camping and repair gear on that I'm looking forward to pulling now. I expect the truck to pull it with even more ease since the SCUBA trailer is enclosed and the atv trailer is open and that never pulled my mileage down as much.

So true!
IF someone drives his truck like a sports car and/or runs inconsisitant tire pressures and/or is maybe late in changing fuel and air filters and\or has a suspect "flash" program in the computer, and\or etc., than his or her advice ain't really worth squat.
I've seen angry posters say as little 5 or 6 MPG and once some idiot who posted he got something like 27 on time,
Anyway, i have a 6.0 supercab, longbed 4x2 auto and can get barely 20 mph unloaded if i drive like grandpa IE, 55-60 mph.
However , i tow 13,500 lbs. regularly and get 8-13 depending on conditions(elevation and grade).
So do the searches and read the posts .....................
I can agree that one might get a hair over 20 lightly loaded with a tail wind going down hill. 27 only if being towed. Less than 10 you either have a chip or programmer set at high horsepower or you have something seriously wrong.
I get on the highway from Birmingham to Shreveport LA , 23 mpg cruise set at 70 mph and empty that is hand calculated with 2003 model extended cab 4x4.
for what its worth, I've tracked my milage off and on since new on my '04 6.0 f250 4x4 3.73 auto SC short bed Lariat. 16 data points and 11000 miles later, here are the results (BTW, my driving habits are as follows - 40 mile round trip commute to work, about 1/2 stop and roll and 1/2 70MPH freeway driving. I also have a 20 foot SeaRay that weighs about 5000 pounds wet that I tow on a 30 mile round trip an average of twice a week from Apr 1-Nov1):
Running average: 14.074 hand calculated
Running average: 16.260 overhead dream-o-meter
Best tank: 16.511
Worst tank: 10.906
I've never run a full tank out on freeway only, but I've seen 20.8 on the dream-o-meter on short trips with no load. As they say, your milage may vary...
40000 miles on my 2003 and my mileage just gets better like I said I get 23 all hwy I live in Birmingham AL 15 miles to and from work in bumper to bumper traffic my worst mileage all city is 15 mpg and I live to accelarate fast with predator on 65 hp mode
