Macgyver IFS compatibility

I have a 1950 F47 half ton, stripped down to bare chassis.

I will be mounting an after market Mustnag II cross member made by either TCI or Macgyver; and am thinking of using 74 pinto front suspension. Am I going to need to modify (shorten) steering assembly since Pinto frame (33 1/2") compared to truck frame of 32" width in front. I will be going with eliminated strut rods. Are there any other changes to be made other than upgrading to 11" brake kit. I would like to maintain steering column of truck, does Borg-Warner make a adapter for front steer modifications to match exisiting truck manual steering ?

any input appreciated

Tom

I was able to find the proper Borgeson steering adapter for the F1 series, part# U15N-7DDX730 which would allow for using the exisitng steering column in my 1950 F47.

I would appreciate any feedback on using after market cross member and donor Mustang II IFS parts. Are the donor parts a straight bolt-in or are there modifications in tie rods or rack and pinon steering required ?

As a newbie , I can use any help/advice available.

If I were you I would not eliminated strut rods. The known mustang II failures all had the eliminated strut rods in common. I don't know how common the failure is but better safe than sorry.

Thanks for your reply; I had heard that the strut could cause problems if not aligned absolutely perfectly on frame. I will do more research before making final decision.

MII stuff

Tom,

you might want to look at my page and see what I did on my MII about losing the strut rods.... this was a modification suggested by a expert builder and agreed upon by several others... might give you some ideas...

http://jniolon.clubfte.com/ button at the top of the right (main) frame

there is an article on the general install and one on the mods to eliminate the strut rods....

hope it helps

With the 53-56s you have to spread the rack about 4" (2-2" adapters added to the rack rods).. so you might be really close with your setup... when you start cutting crossmembers and modifying racks you need to be very careful to maintain the geometry of the front end and have a very competent welder do your mods.... this ain't no place to learn welding !!! there has also been a lot of discussion on several other street rod boards... the h.a.m.b. Rodders roundtable and others... do a google on "mustang II IFS and sit back and read for a day or two...

later

john

Macqyver IFS

Thanks John.

With the 1950 frame I should be close; I have opted for the pros at Macqyver Street Rods to do the install. Still fighting with the cost of hub to hub IFS they provide, but no room for error. I will peruse the links and let you know how the install gos.

Thanks again

Tom
