4 speed Top Loader out of a car such as an early Mustang, thats whats going behind mine. The old cruise-o-matics out of the Galaxies and so on also work. Not sure if an FMX will work or not.
Sorry been working hard , It's a 1966 F100, right now it has a 3 speed overdrive ( the electric one ), I noticed at that site on the toploaders it showed a toploater that was a 3 speed with a 4th being overdrive, fully syncroed , the one I have now in not synced in 1st. I was going to do a C6, but I would hate to loose the overdrive. and that toploader looked like just what im looking for.
I beleve it was used in ford cars and trucks in 1978-1979. gona look around and see if I can find one.
Yes, I have one of those. Mine is the external linkage unit. There is another one called a SROD, for Single Rail Over Drive. It has internal linkage.
1st is a little tall with 3.50 and 31's, 1st to 2nd is good. 2nd to 3rd is gap city, but a V8 will bridge that gap easier as it will spin past 3000 for that shift.
4th is .78 I think.
These are not super strong, but will take modest use. Most posts here don't complain much about them, especially compared to the M5OD, the Mazda built replacement which has leak and self destruct issues.
Mine is making noise and they want $500 for a rebuild. I may look into a T-5 as I have light duty needs vs. heavy loads and towing.
Ok I have found one that looks in good shape, no leaks ,clean lub, gears good,
Before I buy it , I need to know if it will just bolt up? Or am I going to need a differant clutch and pressure plate ? will the bolt holes match the bellhousing I have now ?
Jav, how about the Clark 280 series ? They are beefy a 5spd from the 1 1/2 ton or heavier trucks. Mine has a 6.99/4.09/2.24/1.47/1.00 spread. They are usually found behind the FT series ford engines. You'll need to use the FT bell and flywheel and clutch ( flywheel needs to be rebalanced ) . Nice tranny for pickup truckin' DF, @ his Dad's

yes it will bolt up, I have one behind a 360. same clutch pres plate and clutch housing bolt pattern.
dino has brought up an alternative though, there are five speeds that were overdrives that came in medium duties. but you have to change everything from flywheel back. there was also a NP540 that came in those also that was a five speed, but be careful them and the clarks were mostly direct in fifth and few were overdrives.
The same goes for the cast iron toploder external linkage t176 four speed OD, it too is only a two year thing I believe 1978 1979 half tons with six cylinder engine. So make sure you put it in high gear and count rounds before you buy! its almost identical to the regular toploader unless you've seen alot of them before. good luck.
