Transmition filter

All:

I am getting ready to replace my fluid and transmition filter. I really don't want to go all the way to the ford dealer for a filter/gasket. I want to use a high quality filter, but I don't know any of the companies that make these. What are some of the better brands? Napa sells a OE-style filter with a metal backing. Are these OK?

Thanks!

First off what year is your Expy? Differnt years, different transmissions.
Most have reusable gaskets & the OEM style filter should be fine. Again, what year & motor...this will tell me the tranny model.

Mine is an '06. Now that you mention it, the shop manual doesn't say to replace the gasket. Another question, why does the shop service manual say to refill with 5 quarts when the system holds 13?

Thanks!

You have a 4R75 transmission...very basic oil filter. OEM is always best but whatever. You have fluid in the torque converter(about 4 quarts), transmission cooler/coolant lines and fluid sitting in the unit that will not drain when doing a pan drop....that's why they tell you about 5 quarts. I haven't worked on a 06 Expy yet but the converter might have a drain plug. If the fluid is clean don't worry about draining the converter. If you strip the drain plug you're fvct! Make sure you use good fluid(mercon V) and check the fluid level at operating temp on level ground.
