Battery Guage Problem

Battery Guage Problem
About a week ago I noticed a drop in my battery guage. It was in the "Normal" range, usually the needle rode between the "m" and "a" after the glow plugs shut off. Now it doesn't even reach the word "Normal" but is still in the hash marks. I tought the batteries were bad so I returned em and got some optimas. Much dinero 
. When I put them in the guage stayed in the same position. 
So I pulled out my volt meter and I'm getting 14.45 with the pos. on the big guage wire on the alt and the neg on the alt case. Batteries are the same. What gives? What else should I check?
