I just got my factory manuals for my 67 and there is nothing about an FMX, just MX-HD. Yet everyone uses "FMX" all the time. Are they the same thing? Some say yes, some no... I dont see rebuild parts under MXHD but i do see them for FMX. What the????
I found a good site for Identifying Transmission for those in the future. Very FEW people on these boards know anything about the MX Trans and call it an FMX but that is wrong i now know. So for those doing a search for info in the future here it is: http://www.bulkpart.com/fordid.html
The MEDIUM Case Cruso is an MX! And yes, there are rebuild kits for it.
Years ago I had a '69 Cougar. Factory service manual said the transmission was an FMX. It was a manual shift automatic. In D it worked like any other. In 2 it stayed in 2, even from a dead stop. Manual said it was supposed to work like that.

The cougar is a car so it might not apply in the case of trucks for the same years.

the fmx, c-6, c-4 and probably others, all work like that, you put a ford in 2nd gear and it stays there....also when you put it in second gear, say on a boat ramp or facing up a hill, it wont have enough gearing to idle up the ramp or the hill and it will lock the tranny up and not let it roll backwards

This is true for ford transmissions prior to the AOD, EAOD, etc. The overdrive trannys use the gear shift to determine the limit of the maximum gear it can shift to, not what gear it will stay in.
The first time you end up with an xAOD vehicle and expect it to behave like the older trannies, you're in for a slight suprise
